His parents lived and died in Germany. Michael was the youngest of 4 sons and 3 daughters. He emigrated in 1861 to New York and then to Keokuk County. He enlisted for service in the Civil War, entering Co. B, 2nd Iowa Volunteer Inf., mustered out on May 27, 1864. Married Mary A. Horras in 1865. A family of 9 children were born to this union, Frank, who is a porter in one of the leading hotels in Long Branch NJ, Casper, who is a druggist and in real estate in North Dakota, Charles who is a farmer in German Twp and is married to Jennie Killmer, Henry H., who is a druggist in Keota, he married Ressa Wagner, William, who is a farmer in Clear Creek Twp., and is married to Lucy Klett (daughter of Gotlieb and Katherine (Smith) Klett, Miss Bertha, who resides at home, Bessie, who is the wife of John Strupp, Gustav A., who is a farmer in North Dakota and Fred, who has enjoyed a college education and resides at home.
