Michael Thompson, who for fifty years was a prominent resident of this county, died at his late home in Elwood at 3 o'clock this morning of ailments incident to old age. The remains will be brought to this city Friday afternoon and taken to the home of the deceased's daughter, Mrs. G. W. Ammon, on East Sycamore street. The funeral will take place from the house at 10 o'clock Sunday morning, conducted by the Rev. Sellers, of the Christian church at Elwood. Interment will be made in the Greentown cemetery. Michael Thompson was born near Hot Springs, Virginia, May 22, 1813. He came to Indiana while still a youth, settling in Delaware county. He became a resident of Howard county nearly fifty years ago and continued here until about five years ago when he went to Elwood. He represented Delaware county in the state legislature two terms and was twice chosen to that body from Howard county. He was a member of the general assembly of 1851 and 1852 which reenacted all the laws of the state under the new constitution. He is believed to have been the last survivor of that body. For forty years Michael Thompson was a leader in the Republican party in this part of the state, continuing his connection with the party from the time of its organization in 1856 until the national campaign of 1896. When the free silver agitation arose, he espoused the cause of the white metal, became a bitter assailant of Republican policies and made speeches for Bryan. Until extreme age impaired his physical and mental vigor, Michael Thompson was a man calculated to hold his own in any company. He had many admirable qualities, and these are the ones that are remembered now that he is gone. He is survived by six children, John Thompson, of Tennessee; Mrs. John A. Pierece and Mrs. G. W. Ammon, of this city; Mrs. Amanda Lindley, of Liberty township; Mrs. Stephen P. Lee, Greentown, and Mrs. S. L. Tucker, of Pleasanton, Kansas.
