His funeral service will be 3:00 PM Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at Zion American Lutheran Church, Eureka, SD, with Pastor Ryan Gage leading the service. Burial follows at the Church Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites. Organist will be Lana Hilgemann and the congregation will sing "Amazing Grace" and "In his Time". Soloist Charles Koerner will sing "Blessed Assurance" and "the old Rugged Cross". Ushers will be Don Kaul and Duane Wanner. Milbert Ludwig Bauer, son of Magdalena (Schweigert) and Karl Bauer, was born November 16, 1927 near Eureka. His formal education consisted of rural school and Eureka High School (Class of 1946) where he was active in athletics. Milbert served his country in the United States Navy, being inducted June 19, 1946. Following his honorable discharge on April 14, 1948, he returned to Eureka and learned the electrical trade while being employed at Bareither Electric. He later became employed at Montana Dakota Utilities (MDU). Milbert married Virginia Beck at the Zion American Lutheran Church in Eureka on June 1, 1956. Over the years with MDU, the family lived in Ashley, ND, McLaughlin, SD, Ipswich, SD, Selby, SD, and Eureka. By the time Milbert retired in 1991, he had worked his way up to District Manager. Milbert and Virginia continued living in Eureka until 1999 when they settled in Aberdeen. Milbert belonged to the Zion Church in Eureka and the Fred Weller American Legion Post No. 186, Eureka, SD. Over the years, Milbert also belonged to various organizations in the communities where he resided. He was an avid golfer, winning many trophies at tournaments over the years. Milbert also played for the Eureka Amateur Baseball team where he earned the nickname Radar. Mr. Bauer is survived by Virginia, his wife of 55 years; 1 son Keenan (Marly) Bauer of Aberdeen; 1 daughter Karla (Kordell) Balster of Aberdeen; 1 sister Lillian Olsen of Bismarck, ND; 4 Grandchildren and 6 Great Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father on September 10, 1969, his mother on August 11, 1987, 1 infant son (Steven) and 1 brother (Ervin). Casketbearers will be Joshua Balster of Sioux Falls, SD, Jordan Balster of Green Bay, WI, Kevin Reed of Aberdeen, and Randy Olsen, Gail Olsen, and Larry Norheim all of Bismarck. Lien-Straub Funeral Chapel of Eureka is in charge of arrangements.
