Description	:	Mildred "Millie" Hazel Nelson, 90, of Memphis, MO, died January 4, 2003, at the Scotland County Memorial Hospital in Memphis, MO. She was born February 21, 1912, in Exline, IA, the daughter of Ira Ross and Ila Blanche Sidwell Dobyns, one of 11 children. Read More	Mildred "Millie" Hazel Nelson, 90, of Memphis, MO, died January 4, 2003, at the Scotland County Memorial Hospital in Memphis, MO. She was born February 21, 1912, in Exline, IA, the daughter of Ira Ross and Ila Blanche Sidwell Dobyns, one of 11 children. Before her marriage she worked as a housekeeper for a family in Bloomfield, IA in which part of the year was spent in Washington, D.C., where she met and married Charles Raymond Nelson, her husband of 49 years. The Nelsons moved to Arbela, MO in 1946 to join the farming operation of Mr. Nelson's father, Fred Nelson with adjoining farms. From this marriage two sons were born, William R. and James D. "JD" Nelson; and from these two sons came five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also from the second marriage of son William she inherited three more step-grandchildren and five more step-great-grandchildren, the younger of whom when told by Millie to call her great-grandma they thought she said grandma grape. The name stuck and she was "grandma grape" from then on, which she got a real kick out of. She loved her children and grandchildren, her flower beds, her dear neighbors and friends. When health permitted she enjoyed being part of card clubs and quilting parties. She made many beautiful quilts, lap robes and couch throws over the years, making a quilt for each of her five grandchildren. She enjoyed eating out and going places. She was an avid letter writer and card sender and enjoyed cards and letters she received in turn. She wasn't afraid to ask a question. When she wanted to know something she asked, and expected an answer! For her age she really seemed to understand a lot of modern day problems and family situations, always willing to give her opinion. She was a member of the Mt. Moriah Church of which she was a member for years. At the time of her death she was survived by two sons, William R. Nelson of Davenport, IA and James D. "JD" Nelson of Memphis, MO; four grandsons, Brian, Chad, and Jeff Nelson, all of Davenport, IA, and Chris Nelson of Memphis, MO; one granddaughter, Angie Nelson of Memphis, MO; one great-granddaughter, Payton Nelson of Memphis, MO; and one great-grandson, Nicholas Nelson of Davenport, IA; three sisters, Verna Davidson, Lois Ware, and Norma Hancock; and one brother, James Dobyns. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Raymond; three sisters, and three brothers. The family has suggested memorials to: Mt. Moriah Cemetery and may be left at or mailed to the Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison, Memphis, MO 63555. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 8, 2003, at the Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO, 9:00 a.m. until time of the service at 1:30 p.m. The family will receive friends from noon until time of the service. Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 8, 2003, at 1:30 p.m. at the Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO, with Pastor David Hartsfield, officiating. Body bearers will be Brian Nelson, Jeff Nelson, Angie Nelson, Chad Nelson, Chris Nelson, and Stanley Barker. Honorary bearers will be Raymond Parker, Dale Robertson, Larry Bloomfield, and Kenneth Eggleston. Interment will be in the Mt. Moriah Cemetery in rural Scotland County, MO.
