Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 4, at Bemis Holland Presbyterian Church in Bemis, with Pastor Terry Drew officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Wight, Comes & Sogn Funeral Chapel in Watertown. Interment will be at Lakeview Cemetery in Clear Lake. Pallbearers will be Harry Boersma, Eric Engelbrecht, Allen Taken, Greg Lanners, Ed Cass and Jim Pommer. Mrs. Taken was born March 5, 1911, in Deuel County. She was the oldest of four children born to Jane (Prange) and Harry Boersma. In 1914 he built the house in which she lived most of her life. After graduating from Castlewood High School in 1929, she went to the University of Minnesota and Huron College. For several years, she taught country school south of Clear Lake. Prior to her marriage, she farmed with her brother, Leslie, in Deuel County. On Dec. 12, 1945, she married Floyd Jay Taken and they continued farming with Leslie until 1950. Worsening health problems for Mildredʼs mother, Jane, prompted the Takens to move to the Boersma home place. They farmed there for the remainder of their married life. Her husband passed away in 1996. Mildred stayed on the farm until 1999 when she bought a house in Clear Lake. The last few years of her life were spent at the Good Samaritan Center. The couple had two boys, Richard, born in 1946, and Roland in 1955. In 1975, Richard died of brain cancer. Beginning at the age of 18, she was an active member of the United Presbyterian Women. For more than 50 years, she served as president of the Bemis Presbyterian Churchs Group. As such, she was especially honored to be selected as a delegate to the week long World Conference of Presbyterian Women held at Indianas Purdue University. She also enjoyed a long career as a Sunday School Teacher at the country church.
