Description	:	Mildred Irene Baer, 88, Topeka, died Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, at a Topeka nursing home. Miss Baer taught school in McLouth, Oskaloosa and Wichita and in Topeka at the Highland Park schools where she helped organize the speech pathology program. She retired after 43 years of service. She began her career in 1939 in a one-room school and she served 15 years as a school principal. She taught remedial reading from 1945 to 1959. Read More	Mildred Irene Baer, 88, Topeka, died Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, at a Topeka nursing home. Miss Baer taught school in McLouth, Oskaloosa and Wichita and in Topeka at the Highland Park schools where she helped organize the speech pathology program. She retired after 43 years of service. She began her career in 1939 in a one-room school and she served 15 years as a school principal. She taught remedial reading from 1945 to 1959. She also had been director of special education in the Texas Region IX Education Service Center that served 12 counties before she retired in 1972. After she retired she became an educational consultant to Project PEECH, Texas Region IX, a hometraining program for parents of handicapped children up to 6- years-old. She was born July 31, 1910, at McLouth, the daughter of Bert and Meda Andrus Baer. She earned a bachelor's degree in education at Washburn University and a master's degree at the University of Kansas. She had lived in Topeka since 1983. Miss Baer was a life member of the National and Kansas Speech and Hearing Associations and a member of St. Luke Presbyterian Church in Wichita. A cousin, Albert Alumbaugh, Clearwater, survives. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Presbyterian Manor Chapel. Graveside services at Mount Hope Cemetery will be private. Miss Baer will lie in state from 9 a.m. to noon today at the Davidson Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Good Samaritan Fund at Presbyterian Manor and sent in care of the funeral home.
