Mrs. Mildred De Jong, age 83, of Orange City, died Monday, Feb. 20, 1995 at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Sioux City after a short illness.
A funeral service was held on Thursday, Feb. 23, 1995 at 10:30 a.m. at the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. Pastor Jack Gray officiated. A committal service was held at 1:00 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Ireton under the direction of the Van Etten-Oolman-Van Gelder Funeral Home, Orange City.

Mildred Irene was born Jan. 11, 1912 at Humboldt, S.D., the daughter of Levi Morris and Elizabeth Ellen (Chinrey) Black. The family moved to Ireton when she was in the third grade. She graduated from the Ireton High School in 1930.
On Nov. 23, 1931 she married Richard Herwynen at Vermillion, S.D. They operated a grocery store in Ireton for many years. Mr. Herwynen died Oct. 11, 1964.
On May 8, 1987 she married Orville De Jong at Hawarden. They made their home in Orange City.
In earlier years, Mrs. De Jong was a member of the Ireton United Methodist Church. Since 1990 she had been a member of Calvary Christian Reformed Church where she belonged to the Harmony Circle. She was a former member of the Ireton American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband; a son and his wife, David and Sarah Herwynen of Sioux City; two daughters and their husbands, Jolene and Wendell Kruse of Ireton, and Virginia and Tom Eilers of Novi, Mich,; four grandchildren, Theresa Herwynen of Puposky, Minn., Michelle and her husband Mike Brown of Missouri Valley, Jay Eilers of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., and Jennifer Eilers of Alexandria, Va.; two great-grandchildren, Michael Grant and Matthew Levi Brown of Missouri Valley; a sister and her husband, Pearle and Wayne Venard of Hawarden; two step-sons and their wives, Hallard and Shirley De Jong, and Jay and Gloria De Jong, all of Orange City; four step-grandchildren, and four step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her first husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Lester Coats, and two sisters, Adelia Cridlebaugh and Lulu Siders.
