Interment: October 27, 2007 at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery - Greeley, Iowa Mildred Jane, the daughter of Rose (Bergfeld) Connolly and Henry Hildebrand, was born November 10, 1927, in Huber, Iowa. She was educated in the Delhi area and took classes from the University of Dubuque. She was married to Alfred Wulfekuhle of Ryan in 1946 until his death in 1949. Two sons were born to this union. She married Francis K. Funke on July 11, 1951. They had seven children and farmed northwest of Greeley until 1978 when they moved to Manchester. Jane was employed by ASCS office in Manchester until her retirement in 1995. Jane had many medical challenges in her life, but overcame each of them with a strong will and determination to live each day with dignity and grace. She passed away on Tuesday, October 23, 2007, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids after a brief illness. She was seventy-nine years of age. Jane believed in living each day to its fullest which was evidenced by her many activities including the Greeley Garden Club, the Greeley Rope Pull Team, St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Greeley and the neighborhood card club. She was active in the Democratic Party and worked many election boards and attended the Democratic National Convention with Francis in 1980. Once she and Francis moved to Manchester, Jane became active with St. Mary's Catholic Church enjoying Study Club, Altar & Rosary Society and Catholic Daughters. She also loved to laugh as evidenced by her performances with St. Mary's musical group, the Swinging Sisters. Jane's passion was for senior citizen issues and she used her planning and organizational skills to create many of the wonderful programs at th4e Golden Age Activity Center in Manchester as a member of their operating board and chair of the Activity Committee. She was recently appointed to the Scenic Valley Area VIII Agency on Aging Board of Directors. No one liked adventure more than Jane and she traveled extensively throughout the world during her life. Her travels took her to many countries in Europe, China, Hong Kong, Korea, Australia, The Caribbean, Panama Canal, and to most of the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska. She even white-water rafted in Colorado. She once commented about her travels by saying, "My eyes are full, I've seen so much." Jane was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and could be found on most Saturdays in front of her television cheering on her beloved Hawkeyes. Nothing was more important to Jane than family, and her children, 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren are beneficiaries of her wisdom and love. She was the mother to nine children, John (Janice) Funke of Greenville, South Carolina, Robert (Carol) Funke of Cherokee Village, Arkansas, Francis K. Funke, Jr. (deceased), Elisabeth Anne Funke (deceased), Joseph Funke of Frankfort, Kansas, Daniel (Julie) Funke of Greeley, Jane Ellen (Patrick) McGill of Littleton, Colorado, William (Carrie) Funke of Manchester and Christopher Funke of Palo; grandchildren include Nanette Funke Goode of Joliet, Illinois, Scott Funke of Greer, South Carolina, Jerod Funke of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, Ryan Funke of Charleston, South Carolina, Nick and Emily Funke of Frankfort, South Carolina, Meghan McGill of Littleton, Colorado, Travis, Austin and Drew Funke of Greeley, Ashley and Colin Funke of Manchester; and two step-grandchildren, Toby Steas of Phoenix, Arizona, and Tyler Steas of Lincoln, Nebraska. Other family members include sisters, Mary Lou Kaiser of Earlville, Mae Susan Hildebrand of Republic, Missouri, and Henrietta Terry of Hutchinson, Kansas; brother-in-law, Earl Aldrich of Manchester; sister-in-law, Henrietta Nandell of Muscatine; brother-in-law, James (Kathy) Funke of Edgewood; sisters-in-law, Betty Naber of Edgewood, and Elaine (Robert) Hoffmann of Guttenberg. Jane was preceded in death by Alfred Wulfekuhle and Francis Funke, two children; her parents; and four sisters, Marie Aldrich, Mildred Enabnit, Josephine Gibbs, and Pauline Schultz. Donations in Jane's name can be made to the Golden Age Activity Center, 1208 West Marion Street, Manchester, Iowa 52057.
