Description	:	On January 12, 1923, from a little house in Thompson, Iowa, came a cry of a new-born baby, small and skinny. Lula Pierce had just given birth to her 5th child, a girl. She and Fred named her Mildred Lavonne. The cruel weight of hard times soon forced little Mildred and her family from Thompson to Mason City, Cedar Falls, then Waterloo. Read More	On January 12, 1923, from a little house in Thompson, Iowa, came a cry of a new-born baby, small and skinny. Lula Pierce had just given birth to her 5th child, a girl. She and Fred named her Mildred Lavonne. The cruel weight of hard times soon forced little Mildred and her family from Thompson to Mason City, Cedar Falls, then Waterloo. Then the kindness and generosity of the Hurley family brought the family to a farm on the Des Moines River between Madrid and Woodward. Here Mildred, two sisters, and two little brothers grew up attending a small country school, Elm City (University)! On May 5, 1948, Mildred became Mrs. Warren Lehman and remained so for 37 years. She was the mother of three children: Freddie, Shirley, and Jaynee. Along with being a faithful farm wife and housewife, Millie also worked for the Iowa Lutheran Home as a nurse's aid and for the Madrid Community School in the school lunch program. Mildred's home was always open to one and all. Holidays and birthdays were so often celebrated around her table. The love and joy she so freely shared with all was a product of a special friendship she had begun in her early 20's. It was with Jesus Christ. Her relationship with Him was very personal and was renewed early every morning. She was an attender of the Madrid Church of God and Bethel Open Bible of Des Moines. In March of this year, Mildred caught a cold that she just could not shake. It lingered on in spite of medication and attention. It appeared to be a stubborn sinus infection. On June 21 while visiting her brother in Texas, she was admitted into the hospital. It became apparent that her sinus infection was actually a rarer disease. Her physical condition quickly grew worse. On Saturday afternoon, July 20, at 2:50, an unseen guest came to visit her. His name was Jesus. She had been waiting for Him. When He left, He took her with Him. Her death is mourned today by her family: husband, Warren Lehman of Madrid; son, Rev. Fred E. Lehman of Des Moines; daughters, Mrs. Shirley Barker of Des Moines and Mrs. Jaynee Headley of Madrid, and eight grandchildren: Michael, Michelle, Lyndsay, and Angela Lehman, Eric and Jolene Barker, Steven and Brian Headley. Also two sisters, Gladys Michaelson of Onamia, Minnesota and Juanita Lincoln of Jordan, and two brothers, Ivan Pierce of Arlington, Texas and Dale Pierce of Waterloo. She was preceeded in death by two sisters, Opal Lamping of Minnesota and Dorothy Bixby of Waterloo. She will be missed not only by the family, but by many friends and neighbors.
