Description	:	Mildred L. Charles, 87, of Hiawatha, died Thursday morning, December 16, 2010 at Abundant Life Care Center in Hiawatha, where she had been a resident since 2008. She was born in Upland, California, May 25, 1923, to Ralph and Emma Mae Lenhert Byer, the eldest of six children. She attended the local Elementary and Junior High School in Upland, California. Charles, 87, of Hiawatha, died Thursday morning, December 16, 2010 at Abundant Life Care Center in Hiawatha, where she had been a resident since 2008. She was born in Upland, California, May 25, 1923, to Ralph and Emma Mae Lenhert Byer, the eldest of six children. She attended the local Elementary and Junior High School in Upland, California. Mildred went to High School and college at the Upland Brethren in Christ Church School, Beulah College. She met her husband, Kenneth Charles, while attending college there. They were engaged in December of 1945, and married in Upland, California, May 16, 1946. Mildred cleaned houses and baby sat to pay her way through college. In 1944-46, Mildred worked as a telephone operator, quickly becoming a supervisor, first in Pomona, California, and then in San Bernardino, CA. She and Kenneth moved to the Charles family farm north of Hamlin, KS and raised 7 children. They farmed there until retirement in 1988. They were very involved in the rural Brethren in Christ Church where she taught many Sunday School classes, helped with Bible School, organized your people's meetings, and coordinated seasonal activities. She later attended the Morrill Baptist Church were she also taught Sunday School and assisted with the coffee house ministry as long as she was able. She was an Auxiliary member of the Hiawatha Camp of Gideons International. Mildred loved working with children. She became involved in Child Evangelism Fellowship in 1969 and taught Good News Clubs in both Sabetha and Morrill, Kansas for almost 20 years. In the 1990's, Mildred babysat full time for three families in Hiawatha at different times. In 2002, she and Kenneth moved into an apartment in Hiawatha, KS. They later lived at Maple Heights for a couple of years until Kenneth passed away in April of 2008. Mildred is survived by seven children, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Two surviving sons are, Larry of New Cambria, KS, Meryl (Staci) of Hiawatha, KS; five daughters: Nancy Morton of Mount Joy, PA, Wilma Moser of Sabetha, KS, Sandra Greaves of Crescent City, CA, Kathy (Mark) Baker of Pittsburg, KS, Audry (Paul) Eberhard of Sandusky, MI; a brother Kenneth Beyer of Bethel, MN; three sisters: Harriet Rohrer of Tustin, CA, Eunice Johnson of Tulsa, OK, and Ruth Eshelman of Morgan Hill, CA. Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and a sister Ardys Heise. A celebration of Mildred's life is planned for 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 22, at the Morrill Baptist Church, with Pastor Jeff Perry officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, northeast of Morrill.
