She was born on December 6, 1912, in Hopkins, Mo., to John William and Nora Leah Olmsted Galey. Lucile graduated from Neosho High School, Neosho, Mo. and Joplin Business College, Joplin, Mo. Gray 1912-2011 SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Mildred Lucile Galey Gray, 98, of Springfield, formerly of Maryville, Mo., died peacefully Friday morning, July 22, 2011, at The Manor at Elfindale, Springfield. She was born on December 6, 1912, in Hopkins, Mo., to John William and Nora Leah Olmsted Galey. Lucile graduated from Neosho High School, Neosho, Mo. and Joplin Business College, Joplin, Mo. On April 8, 1939, Lucile married the love of her life, Forrest Lee Gray in Omaha, Neb., at the First Christian Church. They were married for 57 years until his passing on February 24, 1996. Lucile was the Deputy County Clerk from March 15, 1935, through December 31, 1971, being the first "female" Deputy County Clerk in the county. In April 1947, Forrest and Lucile purchased their farm five miles North of Maryville on Highway 148 which was later registered on December 16 1957, in the County Clerk's office as the "Canal Branch Farm". In May, 1981, they sold the farm and moved to Maryville. Lucile shared many stories with those close to her about the farm, as well as her experiences as a young adult helping at her Grandmother's hotel, in Hopkins. Stamp collecting was a favorite pastime. Lucile enjoyed playing the trumpet, her favorite instrument, in the high school band and orchestra. Occasionally she would play solos on a Sunday morning in the Hopkins Christian Church. Lucile was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Maryville, Methodist Women Church Circle and Bloomfield Needlework Club of Maryville. Lucile is preceded in death by her husband, Forrest Gray and parents, John Galey and Nora Bloomfield. She is survived by one step-sister, Mary MacDonald, Albany, Ore.; nieces, nephews, and many great nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held on Monday, July 25, 2011; at Oak Hill Cemetery at 10 a.m. Visitation will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. today, at Price Funeral Home.
