To Mildred’s Memorial, Bruce has added three photographs to his photo of Mildred by way of illustrating the following story: “From circa 1897 to 1924, Mildred Morton taught in one of the public schools of Butler County, Ohio, possibly in Collinsville or Somerville or in their vicinity. One such school is the Collinsville Public School whose teacher and pupils are depicted in one of Bruce’s four photos posted to this Memorial. Second from the left in the front row of standing students is Mildred Morton’s first cousin David Hinsey Morton (1878-1914), Bruce’s maternal grandfather. Mildred’s successful career in public education helped to inspire her first cousins once-removed, Ruth E. Morton (Garver, 1907-2003) and Edith E. Morton (Bippus, 1905-1988) to attend Miami University a Oxford, Ohio, in order to obtain an elementary school teaching certificate, a goal achieved by Edith in 1925 and by Ruth in 1927. Ruth fondly remembered her cousin Mildred Morton and also Mildred’s parents who were Ruth’s and Edith’s great uncle “Willis" and great aunt “Matt”. After the death of Mildred's father, James Willis Morton, on May 14, 1918, Mildred gave to each of her young cousins, Ruth and Edith, an opportunity to select one book from her father's personal library. Ten-year-old Ruth chose “The French Revolution, 1789-1815” (The Chautauqua Press, 1904) by Shailer Mathews, a Professor of history at Columbia University. Surprised at Ruth's apparently sophisticated reading interests, Mildred asked her why she had selected this particular book. Ruth replied that she did so because the book contained a five-dollar bill. Mildred, impressed by Ruth's honesty, allowed her to keep not only the book but also the five-dollar bill, quite a large sum of money in 1918. Circa 1975, Ruth gave this Shailer Mathews book to her son, Bruce Morton Garver, and his wife, Karen Louise King Garver, who had earned a PhD. in modern French history from UCLA in 1974. "Bruce reports that, to the best of his knowledge, Mildred Morton was the first of the descendants of William Wack Morton (1809-1859) and Eliza Walden Morton to have completed a college degree. Although Mildred's parents and their siblings did not advance beyond the eighth grade in school, all of them encouraged their children and grandchildren to value education and to read attentively and widely."
