All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family. Opal was born on November 16, 1925 in Belgrade, daughter of Louie and Freda Marlar. At the age of 5, Opal was adopted by Peter and Emma Gerdes. She is survived by her children, Penny Collingham of Milford, Judy Collingham of Lincoln, Sheila (Mike) Jorgensen of Kearney, Letitia (John) Hazelton of Bellingham, WA, Sandra (Greg) Rene of Loveland, CO,, Peggy Robinson of Clifton, CO, Karen (Jon) Urbina of Grand Island, Richard Collingham of Grand Island; sister Fern Kiuntke of Fullerton; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous extended family and friends. Opal was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Richard and brothers, Arthur Dierks and Roy Gerdes who was killed in WWII. Opal attended school in Burwell until the 8th grade. She graduated with the class of 1941 from York High School. On March 28, 1947 she married Richard Collingham, the couple made their home in York. Opal was an active member for many years of the Nazarene Church in York. She was employed as a Home Health Caregiver, but first and foremost was a devoted wife and mother. As a mother of eight children Opal was “little but mighty” and instilled in her children strong values and work ethic. Opal always opened her door to any animals and there was usually a well- loved cat or dog always around. Her witty humor and stubborn moments made for lifelong memories.
