Mildred "Millie" was born Mildred Pederson in LaMoure, N.D., on Nov. 1, 1920, to Reinholdt and Agnes Pederson, attended elementary and high school in LaMoure, and business school in Jamestown. Millie worked at the courthouse in LaMoure and was married to Richard H. Pals of Grand Rapids, N.D., on June 7, 1941, in Jamestown, N.D. After Dick returned from the army during World War II, he worked for International Harvester in Fargo and transferred to Billings in August 1949. Millie worked as a bookkeeper for several medical doctors in Billings and retired from the office of Dr. Lee Raitz. Her family includes her son, David (Karen) of Billings; daughter, Mary Ann Russell (Ron) of Inwood, W.Va.; grandchildren, Krista Blackford (Cory) and Tonya Halligan (Joe), all of Billings, Ronda Russell of Pasco, Wash., and Roger (Sarah) Russell of Richland, Wash.; great-grandchildren Jacob and Connor Halligan and Triston Blackford, all of Billings; sister Alice (Don) Dunn of Nampa, Idaho; and brother Gordon (Maribeth) Pederson of Seattle. Nieces and nephews include Cheryl (Jim) Putney of Ozark, Ark., Marilyn (Delbert) Bradley of Kent, Wash., Judi Russell of Edgewood, Md., Ron (LaVonne) Garlie of Lihue, Hawaii, Jerry (Laura) Pederson of Kirkland, Wash., Mari Pederson of Tacoma, Wash., and Joe Pederson of Live Oak, Calif. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dick, of 59-1/2 years; her parents, Reinholdt and Agnes Pederson; sister Helen Pederson; and brother Norman Pederson. Millie instilled in her children a strong faith and sense of character, integrity and principle. While being assertive, she would question directly without offending. She cared deeply about her friends and family. Millie enjoyed being with people and having friends, neighbors and relatives near. She worked on civic projects and belonged to many service organizations, including Billings Community Concert Association, Supporting Cast of Billings Studio Theater and was a charter member of Billings Symphony Chorale and a lifetime member of Soroptimist International of Billings. Her passion was enjoying bridge with her many friends in and out of WestPark Village. In addition, she and Dick built their beautiful log cabin on the Stillwater River near Columbus, where they enjoyed many happy years. Millie was active in Women of Mayflower and a member of Mayflower Congregational Church, where a memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 19, at 10 a.m., followed by a reception and inurnment at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be given to the Special K Ranch or the charity of one's choice. Today, we thank God for the life of Millie Pals. She will be greatly missed and remembered as a cherished Mother, loving Grandmother and Great-Grandmother, dear Sister and devoted Friend.
