Stroke of Apoplexy Followed by Uremic Poisoning Proves Fatal; Funeral Held Yesterday. ~ Miles E. Gettys, prominent planter and business man, of the Grassy Pond section of the county, died Wednesday night about 9:30 in the City Hospital, which he entered the day before following a stroke of apoplexy. He was unconscious at the time of entering the hospital, but rallied Wednesday, morning and seemed to be improving satisfactorily until later in the day when uremic poisoning developed and caused death, according to the attending physician. ~ Dr. R.T. Monroe, of Charlotte, and Dr. Roy P. Finney, of Spartanburg, both of whom are specialists, were called into consultation by Mr. Getty’s attending physician. All methods adopted to relieve the condition of the patient failed. ~ Funeral services were yesterday afternoon at the Grassy Pond Baptist church by the Rev. W.A. Hafner, pastor of the Limestone Presbyterian church, and the Rev. J.D. Bailey, of Cowpens, a former pastor of the Grassy Pond church. Interment followed in the churchyard with the Shuford-Hatcher Company, morticians, in charge. ~ The active pallbearers were T.C. Parker, Claud Littlejohn, Judson Smith, R.C. Swofford, L.C. Warmoth, E.A. Robbs, R.J. LeMaster and B.W. Humphries. ~ Honorary pallbearers included J.A. Carroll, D.C. Ross, C.M. Smith, R.S. Lipscomb, G.G. Byers, W.E. Peeler, Dr. C.A. Jefferies, W.F. Smith, Dr. W.L. Poole, N.H. Littlejohn, J.N. Lipscomb, and C.C. Blanton, of Shelby, and Graham Dellinger, of Chester. Maynard Smith and Dr. W.C. Hamrick were on the list but were unable to be present, the former by reason of illness. Dr. Hamrick was out of town. ~ Mr. Gettys, who was 54 years old last Saturday, had been in declining health for more than a year. ~ Coming to Cherokee county from Rutherford county, N.C., about 30 years ago Mr. Getty’s , who was said to have been practically penniless at the time, engaged in the monazite business, which was flourishing here then. He obtained a foothold and gradually accumulated a considerable amount of property and business interests here and in Georgia. He was the president and principal owner of the Gettys Lumber Company, of this city, was one of the directors of the American State Bank, and was connected with various other enterprises. He was a former member of the Rotary Club. ~ Mr. Gettys was generally regarded as one of the county’s most valuable citizens. He was quiet and unpretentious in nature, but was a man of the highest character and dependability. ~ He is survived by his wife, who before marriage was Miss Dora Carlton, and the following children: Mrs. George McKeown, Annie, Arthur, Sara, Lucile and Miles Gettys, Jr.
