Ferol Hendershot, 13, and his brother Millard Hendershot, 11years old, sons of Mrs. Mae Hendershot of Goff, were killed Friday afternoon when they were buried by tons of sand which slid from a high bank by the roadside about three miles from Goff. Two little friends, Harvey and Elmer Clark, who were with them at the time, escaped uninjured. The boys who were killed were great nephews of Mrs. Henry Carpenter of Sabetha. The boys had gone to the timber in search of hazel nuts and were returning to their homes in Goff. Setting their sack of nuts down by the roadside they left their little dog on guard and started to play, “follow the leader.” They walked along under the bank when one of the boys reached out his hand and dug out some of the sand. About that time a large part of the bank caved in, burying Ferol and Millard. The Clark boys were partly covered but the older one dragged his brother up and then tried to dig the Hendershot boys out. Failing in that they hurried to the highway, a short distance away. They hailed an auto but it did not stop; then a man with a hay rack came and soon a crowd had gathered. The bodies were recovered probably in less than a half-hour but both boys were dead. That evening when friends went to the scene of the accident they found the faithful little dog still on guard. Ferol and Millard Hendershot were sons of Mrs. Mae Hendershot. Their father, Lester Hendershot, who died four years ago was a nephew of Mrs. Henry Carpenter of Sabetha. Mrs. Hendershot was employed at the Hanna Poultry Plant when the accident occurred. She is regularly employed there. Besides their mother they are survived by two sisters and three brothers, the youngest a little over 4 years old. The girls are both working and Miss Dessie will teach this fall. They are also survived by their grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hendershot of Atchison. Funeral services were held at Goff Sunday and burial was made in the Wetmore cemetery beside their father. More than a hundred relatives were in attendance and hosts of sympathizing friends.
