Millie Shaver Beard was born in Harrisonburg, Va,, December 2; 1889 the daughter of C. D. and Millie Shaver Beard. She was a child of Christian parents and of a Christian home, her father being an elder in the Harrisonburg Presbyterian Church and Clerk of the Session, and her mother a devoted and active member of that Church. Early in life Mrs. Smith united with the church of her parents and was conspicuous for her Christian devotion and usefulness; always cheerful and bright, yet ever faithful in every duty and relationship, whether in the home or among her girlhood friends. Her early training was in the private school of the Misses Davis in Harrisonburg, Va. from which she went to Peace Institute in Raleigh, N. C, where she graduated in the English course and in Music and was assistant teacher there for a few years. In January, 1914, she went out as a missionary under appointment by the Foreign Mission Board of the Presbyterian Church in the United States, being mainly supported by the Societies of her home church and was sent to Soochow, China, as assistant teacher in Miss Fleming's School for Girls where she soon won a warm place in the hearts of all by her consecration and efficiency, and she was soon placed at the head of the school. On March 23, 1916, she married Rev. Cecil H. Smith, a missionary of the Presbyterian Church in the United States at Yanchung, North Kiang in Mission China and went with him to that station. Her removal was a great loss to the school at, Soochow where she was wonderfully useful, and beloved. In Yenchung, she entered very actively into the mission work with her husband; going with him on his evangelistic tours and conducting Bible Classes among the women who had never before seen a foreign woman in these remote districts. She also organized a boarding school in Yenchung for Chinese girls which is becoming well known and very helpful. Her common designation among the Chinese was "Dinghoa" - The very best, the good one in whom nothing else could be desired." She will be greatly missed in the religious work and church services at Yenchung and espectilly in the "Chapel at the west gate" of the city for into all that was truly Christian and helpful she gave herself and all her ability gladly and winsomely. She won a way into the mother's hearts by her fine musical gifts and training, for they were always eager to have their children taught music, and she kept her hold upon these people, deepening and widening her influence because of her absolute faithfulness and dependability, not only as teacher but as a friend and helper for Christ's sake and by His grace. She was only a joy and comfort as daughter, wife, and missionary, because, like Paul, she was "the fragrance of Christ, breather alike upon all." She had hoped later to visit with her little daughter , Marie, and her husband, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. N. Smith, of Big Sandy, Texas, but the Father planned otherwise, for that meeting to be where is no pain and parting. Her husband, so devoted, tender, and untoring through her long illness; her loved ones, to whom she was very dear; her host of friends; the many whom she moved to Christ-like life in this land and in China can heartily say: "So long Thy power has blest me, Sure it still Will Lead me on O'er moor and fen, o'er crag and torrent the The night is gone; And with the morn those angel-faces smile, Which I have loved long since, and lost awhile."
