Description	:	One of the most disastrous auto accidents to ever happen to a community involved Edward Zmolek, 17, and his younger brother, Milo, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Zmolek, and Ernie Chalupnik, 14, son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis F Chalupnik. Edward was killed instantly and Milo died shortly after being taken to a Marshalltown hospital. Ernie died that evening at St Francis hospital in Waterloo. Injured was the driver of the other vehicle, George Ottsen, owner of the Ottsen and Sons Oil Company of Cedar Rapids. He was driving a Chevrolet panel truck. The tragedy occurred at the intersection of what is now known as Highway E-29 and a north-south road, then dirt, between sections 4 and 5, six miles south of Traer. The three youths were riding together in a 1928 Chevrolet sedan owned by Riha Motor Company of Vining loaned to the Chalupniks while their truck was being repaired. The panel truck was heading east and the youths, traveling south, either didn’t stop or else failed to see the other vehicle. Charles Wacha, driving his gas truck, was the first person to come upon this grizzly scene. Darlene (Herink) Soska vividly recalls that day as her parents went to the scene, but refused to take her along. Time stopped still in the minds of many for they will never forget what they were doing that day. Triple funeral services were held the following Saturday at the Immaculate Conception church in Clutier attended by more than 1,200 people. The three young victims were buried in their family plots at St Vaclav Cemetery. Those were sad days for friends and family of the Chalupnik and Zmolek families. They lives were altered forever.
