Description	:	Milo Merle Speckels was born June 20, 1932 at home in rural Chamberlain to Emil August and Ella Agnes (Veskerna) Speckels. On September 25, 1933, Milo was baptized in the Lutheran faith at Omaha, NE and was confirmed at the Zion Lutheran Church in Chamberlain in 1946. He attended Weideman Rural School through the eighth grade and graduated from Chamberlain High School in 1950. He was a lifelong farmer in the Chamberlain area. Read More	Milo Merle Speckels was born June 20, 1932 at home in rural Chamberlain to Emil August and Ella Agnes (Veskerna) Speckels. On September 25, 1933, Milo was baptized in the Lutheran faith at Omaha, NE and was confirmed at the Zion Lutheran Church in Chamberlain in 1946. He attended Weideman Rural School through the eighth grade and graduated from Chamberlain High School in 1950. He was a lifelong farmer in the Chamberlain area. In December of 1950, Milo enlisted in the U.S. Air Force riding the train for three days to Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX. He was trained on the WWII TPS Radar Unit only to be reassigned to the radio. In October 1951, he was sent to Cheyenne, WY to learn communications and in January 1952, received an Honorable Discharge and returned home to the family farm. On August 7, 1972, Milo was united in marriage to Lila Olinger at the Zion Lutheran Church in Chamberlain. Together, they built a home on the family farm where they raised four daughters. They farmed and raised grain, cattle, hogs, chickens, turkeys, guineas, and peacocks. Milo enjoyed hunting and made two trips to hunt moose at Fort Nelson, British Columbia and Brooks Range in Alaska. For many years Milo helped family and friends hunt pheasants at the farm. He enjoyed woodworking making many picture frames and other furniture. He was also the family photographer. Milo was a member of the Chamberlain Lions Club, a founding member SD Lions Eye Bank; a member of the SD Lions Eye Bank Founders Club, a PUFL American Legion Potter Post No. 3 for 66 years, and a life member of the NRA. He was a Chamberlain Township Board member from 1970 until 2011, a past member of the Chamberlain Jaycees, and a member of the SD Farm Bureau. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Chamberlain serving as treasurer for 11 years. After struggling for several years with Parkinson's Disease, Milo passed away on September 25, 2015 at home at the age of 83 years. Gratefully sharing his life are his wife Lila of Chamberlain; four daughters Christy Hickey of Chamberlain, Connie Speckels and Shawn Andera of Chamberlain, Julie Degen and husband Travis of Mitchell, and Jaimee Keiner and husband Billy of Chamberlain; a mother-in-law Eva Olinger of Sioux Falls; brother Leroy Speckels of Chamberlain; brother-in-law Joe Hieb and wife Helen of Chamberlain; 13 grandchildren Kris, Erik, Alix, and Ian Hickey, Robyne Gilman, Terryn, Brooke, and Trey Degen, Gracee and Jerry Keiner, and Sydney, Rylee, and Kenna Andera; three great grandchildren Tayten Johnson, Addelynn Hickey, and Otto Hickey; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, sister Lucille Hieb, father-in-law Marvin Olinger, and sister-in-law LaVerle Speckels.
