Persons, at the age of 91 years, 10 months, and 25 days. Deceased was one among the first white settlers of Iowa County, and up to the date of his death had lived a greater length of time in the county than any other person who had ever been a resident here." "He was born in Duchess Co, NY and came to the town of Dodgeville on the 10th day of Oct. 1827 and ever after that had been engaged in farming and mining until age compelled him to retire from labor. He was married to Miss Jerusha Tyrer on the 5th day of April, 1833, this being the first marriage of white people that occurred in the town of Dodgeville, and they lived happily and prosperously together for over 60 years within a radius of less than 80 rods of the cabin in which they were married, and where since they both have died, Mrs. Persons having died on the 10th of Feb. 1899, being 11 months and 18 days before the death of her husband." "Mr. Persons was a pensioner of the Black Hawk War, having served in the commands of Col. Henry Dodge and Gen. Henry Atkinson throughout that campaign, and took part in the battles with the Indians at Lake Koskonong, Wisconsin Heights, and the decisive battle at the mouth of the Badax River, soon after which the chief Black Hawk was captured." "He was the father of 13 children, 8 of whom are left surviving him: Thos. B, who lives at Sulphur Creek, Calif., Sarah, wife of Bluford S. Morris, residing in Montana; Ellen, wife of William K Aldersley of Napa, Calif; Jane, widow of the late Joseph Wickham of Camp Rook, S. Dak; James Milton Persons, of Galena, KS, and Henry W, John J. and Miss Anna E, who live on the old homestead in the town of Dodgeville." "Mr. Persons during all his life, had been an active, industrious, upright and conscientious citizen and in his death leaves a large community of friends to speak his praise as he goes down to the grave bearing the distinctive honors that an upright life and venerable age can never fail to confer. The funeral took place from the family home, on Monday of this week, with services conducted by Rev. J. W. Custer, pastor of the Dodgeville Circuit of the M. E. Church, and the remains were brought to the Dodgeville Cemetery and laid to their final rest beside those of the aged companion in life, to 'sleep the sleep that knows no waking."
