The death of Mr. Doan, the elder of the milling firm Doan & Son, last Saturday at 5 o'clock in the afternoon, fell upon the community very unexpectedly, as it was understood that he had for some days shown marked improvement, being able on Thursday to walk out into the yard. Friday afternoon, however, his disease, a complication of kidney troubles, took on a serious aspect and he gradually declined until the death messenger called him from his earthly toil and brought to end his long but useful pilgrimage. Mr. Doan was a Quaker and his quiet, almost isolated, but upright life attested the influence of his early associations with that pure and stately esteemed class of people. For more than twenty years Mr. Doan and two sons, Hicks and Hayden, have been operating the flouring mill, among whose previous owners were Metcalf, Graham & Co. Though they have repeatedly suffered heavy losses by the partial destruction of their mill-dam, the fight against misfortune was made with a silent heroism and perseverance which was at last crowned with most satisfactory realizations, the mill being completely refitted three years ago and as fine a complement of roller process machinery as can be found in Iowa being placed in most successful operation. Mr. Doan lived here nearly a quarter of a century, and in all that time we never heard aught said against him by any man. He has toiled faithfully, honestly, for those whom he loved, and it was indeed fitting that he should come down to the tomb in the serenity and satisfaction of his labor-crowned years in the midst of his loving family and a sympathizing community. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. J. B. Fiske at the residence of the deceased yesterday at two p.m., attended by a large number of relatives and citizens. The pall-bearers were: Dr. W. M. Skinner, S. A. Pope, C. H. Lull, E. J. Wood, S. Needham and A. Heitchen. The following brief historical sketch is furnished by the family: Milton Doan was the son of Daniel and Mary Doan and was born in Bucks county, Pa., Nov. 17th, 1809, and emigrated with his parents to Jefferson county, Ohio, in 1820, and from thence moved in 1824 to Muskingum county, Ohio, and there lived with his parents until 1831, when he was married to Ruthannah Slack, and went onto a farm of his own of 160 acres of heavy timber land and cleared 120 acres with his own hands and lived on it until the fall of 1853, then moved to Linn county, Iowa, with a family of seven children. In the year 1859 there was another daughter born, making eight children in all which still survive him, this being the first death in the family. In the year 1867 he bought the mill property at Anamosa and moved there the last of February, operating the same until the time of his death, which occurred April 21, 1888. Same edition: The children from abroad who attended the funeral of Mr. M. Doan yesterday were: Mr. Wm. T. Doan, residing near Zanesville, Ohio; Daniel Doan, of Springville; and Mrs. John Nicholson, of Ainsworth, Nebraska. Mr. Ulysses Doan, of Sterling, Kansas, telegraphed that he would be present, and the services were deferred on his account, but he seems to have been detained for some reason not yet known to the family. Two sisters of the deceased are yet living, one 84 years of age and the other past 91.
