One of the venerable pioneers of Buckeye township, who has lived to see and take part in the wonderful transformation of Hardin county during the past quarter of a century and thus profited alike himself and the community in general, is Milton Fish, whose worthy career has been such that the younger generation in his vicinity can emulate it with profit owing to the fact that his life has not only been industrious and that of a public-spirited citizen, but has been singularly free from all that would deteriorate from the highest ethics of living. Few men are better known here than he and none are more highly regarded. He hails from the old Empire state, his birth having occurred in Jefferson county, New York, on September 14, 1829. He is the son of Furman and Caroline (Rose) Fish, both also natives of that locality. The father was a man of considerable education and became influential and prominent in his county, being a member of the Legislature in 1858. He was a self-made man, gaining most of his knowledge by arduous home study and by actual contact with the world. He was a very adroit penman. For many years he was justice of the peace at Tylersville, New York. He had a shoe and harness factory and later in life owned a good farm. Politically he was a Republican and religiously a member of the Universalist church. He and his wife remained in Jefferson county, New York, and died there. They were the parents of six sons and two daughters, namely: Myron, deceased; Milton, of this review; George, deceased; Turman is living retired at Anamosa, Iowa; Albert and Daniel are deceased; Manilla married Henry Sutter and lives in Jefferson county, New York. Milton Fish received only a common school education, which has been augmented later in life by miscellaneous reading. He lived at home until his marriage, on December 22, 1859, to Loenza Ostrander, of Madison county, New York, daughter of John J. and Ann (Rogers) Ostrander, the mother a native of Vermont and the father of New York state, he being a farmer of Jefferson county, that state. She died and Mr. Ostrander married a second time, his last wife being Amy Hobbs, of New York. Eight children were born of the first union, namely: Leroy, deceased; Loenza, wife of Mr. Fish, of this review; Adelade lives in Jefferson county, New York; Charles, Levi E., Asa, Jane and Eliza, the last two twins, also live in Jefferson county, New York; Asa is deceased. Seven children have been born to Milton Fish and wife, namely: Hattie married Alonzo Lovejoy, and they live at Alden, Iowa; Frank and Frank L. are deceased; Adelade married William Miller, deceased, of Buckeye, Iowa; Jason, a farmer and owner of a fine herd of brown Swiss cattle and an excellent drove of Belgian horses, lives in Franklin county, Iowa; he was clerk of Buckeye township for six years; he lived at home until he married Carrie Boyer, of Alden, Iowa, on February 15, 1911; Byron Fish, who has always lived at home, operates the farm for his father and he is the owner of a good herd of brown Swiss cattle; Albert, who is also at home, works for his brother Byron. After his marriage Milton Fish lived six years in the state of New York, and came to Jones county, Iowa, in 1866 and in 1869 moved to Buckeye township, Hardin county, and purchased one hundred and sixty acres of wild land from the government; this he brought up to a high state of improvement and cultivation in due course of time and became one of the leading farmers of his community. His place is well watered by flowing wells and in every respect is one of the most desirable places in the township. Mr. Fish has always taken an abiding interest in the affairs of his township and county and for many years he was trustee, assessor and justice of the peace. Politically, he is a stanch Republican.
