Description	:	Milton Milbert Steiger of Glenham, after basic training during World War II, went to Camp Carson in Colorado for maneuvers. While there, he made a command performance for President Roosevelt by showing him how they would row their boats to Normandy. Before the demonstration, Milton had the opportunity to meet with President Roosevelt who asked if Milton would consider making the service a career. Milton's reply was, "No, I'm going to farm." Before the demonstration, Milton had the opportunity to meet with President Roosevelt who asked if Milton would consider making the service a career. Milton's reply was, "No, I'm going to farm." President Roosevelt responded by saying, "Farming is a fine job." Milton served as a messenger and runner while in service and the first action he saw was within 10 miles of Omaha Beach, Normandy. His company was the first replacement to come in. The other company had lost its runner so Milton became runner right away, just as his father had been in World War I. The runner's job was to take messages from company to squad or company to platoon by foot. He captured prisoners while in service and was wounded, for which he received a Purple Heart. He also secured packages from the Germans. He took his job seriously and wanted the others to remember the serious job they had. Milton was honorably discharged from Fort Bliss, Texas, on Oct. 7, 1945, and returned to his family farm to farm, which he did for the remainder of his life. He used to say, "I want to get as old as Methuselah!" Methuselah, according to the Bible, lived to be 969 years. Milton, who had been in failing health, died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2008, at the Golden LivingCenter in Mobridge at the age of 86, somewhat short of his goal. Even failing health didn't diminish his talent for teasing and joking. After a fall, he explained, "The floor came up and hit me." He would tease his girls and grandkids, "Gee, you are a nice looking boy." To which they would protest, "I'm a girl!" Or he would tell them it was a pretty red dress they were wearing and they would fuss, "No, it's a blue dress!" Milton was always ready for a friendly argument. He loved to visit with people and not even his illness could stop him. He was born Nov. 20, 1921, to Adolph and Katie (Junker) Steiger one mile south of the home place, and grew up on the farm 10 miles north of Glenham. He attended the rural Wayside School until the eighth grade and worked the family farm until entering the U.S. Army on Sept. 7, 1942. In 1946, Milton attended Auctioneer School in Mason City, Iowa, and also took mechanic training. On Dec. 31, 1950, Milton married Betty Ballensky in Akaska. Following their marriage, they made their home on a farm on the county line until 1962 when they moved to their present farm 9 miles north of Glenham. He was a member of the United Congregational Church and was a past deacon. Survivors are his wife of 57 years, Betty Steiger of Glenham; five children, Mike and Brenda Steiger and Dan and Nancy Steiger, all of Mobridge, Karen and Dana Schlomer of Mandan, N.D., Paul and Sheila Steiger of Sturgis and Phil and Linda Steiger of Glenham; 13 grandchildren, Melissa (Josh) Shoop, Megan Steiger, Justin (Jen) Steiger, Tyson Steiger, Carmen (Shawn) Kuntz, Erin (Jesse) Hehr, Lance, Sarah, Kayla, Lucretia, Wyatt and Lacy Steiger and Cheyenne White Bull; seven great grandchildren, Sydney, Reed, Tate, Lucas, Hannah, Emily and Aurelia, plus three more upcoming great grandchildren; and two sisters, Vernetta and the Rev. Ted Bader of Parkston, and Arlene and Bob McClain of Thornton, Colo. Milton was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Stanley and Edmond; one sister, Luella; brother-in-law, Art Kluth; and father and mother-in-law, William and Marcia Ballensky. Funeral services for Milton were Monday, Aug. 25, at the United Congregational Church in Mobridge with Pastor Keith Kraft officiating. Margaret Stadel was organist, Mary Ann Lowe was pianist and Ben Kraft was soloist for "In The Garden." Congregational hymns were "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic." Special recordings of "Daddy's Hands" and "Grandpa" were also played. Casketbearers were Justin Steiger, Tyson Steiger, Melissa Shoop, Megan Steiger, Carmen Kuntz, Erin Hehr, Lance Steiger, Sarah Steiger, Kayla Steiger, Lucretia Steiger, Cheyenne White Bull, Wyatt Steiger and Lacy Steiger. All of Milton's family and friends were honorary bearers. Burial was at St. Peter's Congregational Cemetery in rural Glenham under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Full military rites were provided by the Mound City-Herreid American Legion Post. Dylon Mickelson of Selby was the bugler. Mobridge Tribune Wednesday, September 3, 2008
