Schafer, living 2 1/2 miles southwest of calamus, had bee shot and instantly killed by her step-son, Linden Schafer, and a party composed of Dr. C. J. Heckard, Dr. A.W. Cook, Constable Frank Witte and Ernest Hurlburt, of the Clinton Advisor, immediately drove over. Wm. J. Schafer and second oldest son Virtow, were that and informed them what had happended. According to their testimony which was later corroborated at the corner's inquest the fracas had started shotrly after dinner, when the father, Wm. Schafer, told the boys, Linden and Virtow to water the horses, which they refused to do. Schafter then chased Virtow out into the field and took a 32-calibre revolver away from him, discharging the one cartridge it contained into the air. While father and son were thus engaged, Mrs. Schafer had caught Linden and was choking him, when he broke away from her and seized a 12-gauge Winchester shotgun which stood near, and made a break to get away, she followed him to the gate, beating him over the head with a broom, until he turned on her and pointed the gun at her, when in an instant it was discharged and she received the full contents of the load in her left side, entering the heart and killing her instantly. Schafer testifies that he did not see Linden pull the trigger but heard the report of the gun, turned and saw his wife fall, the boy throw the gun beside her and run crying down the lane. Linden went to Calamus at once and gave himself up to Marshal Grant Brown, who had received a telephone message telling him to arrest the boy. Coroner C.F. Kellogg, of Clinton, impanneled Geo. hayes, John Kampen and Frank A. Pieper, who after hearing the evidence, returned a verfice of wilful shooting and recommended that Linden Schafer be held to the grand jury without bail. Wm. Schafer and Virtow were held as accessories to the fact and placed under $1,000 bonds each. Linden plead not guilty and waived the right to examination, and was taken to Clinton to Await the action of the grand jury. The case is deplorable one in many ways. The Schafer home is known as the dirtiest in the Springrock township, and according to the testimony of the boy now in the clutches of the law, the life afforded him and his brothers since his mother died has been one of total degradation and filthiness. They have had no chance of eductation, wore torn and ragged clothes, and ate what happended to be slung out to them in the shape of food. For a boy of seventeen years of age, Linden's life has been anything but pleasant, but through he denies any intention to kill his stepmother, there is little or no regret expressed over her death. In fact the whole family show slight symptoms of having the feelings usually possessed by humans, but rather have all the marks of a degenerate bunch. More could be said of the tragedy, but its disgusting details are in themselves but poor literature, and but tends to lower the present level of all those concerned. The courts will decide and really the least guilty will pay the penalty.
