Mass of Christian Burial for Minerva Herman, age 96, of Timber Lake will be at 10 AM MT on Monday Dec. 6, 2010 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Timber Lake. Burial will be in the Timber Lake Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will be from 2-4 PM CT, Sunday at the funeral home and starting at 7 PM MT Sunday with a Prayer service at 8 PM MT at the church. Mrs. Herman passed away Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at the Golden Living Center in Mobridge. Minerva Ursula Herman was born on October 22, 1914 to Herman and Loretta Vander Mark on the homestead claim south of Firesteel, SD. She attended St. Joseph Elementary and the Warner School. She graduated from St. Joseph High School in Timber Lake in 1932. After receiving her teaching certificate at Northern Normal and Industrial School in Aberdeen, she taught for 5 years in the rural schools in Dewey Co. and in Firesteel. On June 27, 1939, she married Alvin Herman at St. Mary's Church in Isabel, SD and they made their home and raised their five children in Firesteel until 1964 when they moved to Timber Lake. In 1959 she began working for Moreau Grand Electric as a bookkeeper. She was employed there for 20 years retiring in 1979. She was the District Leader for the Census in 1980 and had been the scale master for Dewey Co. Coal Company before beginning at Moreau Grand. Minerva was always very active in the community and Church. She was a member of the Sew Willing Extension Club for its entire time and then joined the Sunshine Extension Club in Timber Lake. She was a member of the Timber Lake Garden Club and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was very active in the Timber Lake and Area Historical Society as a member and Treasurer for many years. She was also the Treasurer for the Timber Lake Cemetery Association and the Dewey County Democrats and audited the books for many local organizations. She delivered Meals on Wheels in her 80's to the ‘old' people. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Isabel, St. Michael's Catholic Church in Firesteel and Holy Cross Catholic Church in Timber Lake. She was very active in the Altar Societies, and served as Sacristan, Lector and Religious Education Teacher for many years. Minerva loved to garden and her beautiful yard and houseplants were labors of love. She did needlework of all kinds. She made crocheted tablecloths, bedspreads and doilies. Hardanger embroidery became her special love and many people received a piece of her handiwork. After spending almost 94 years of her life in Dewey County, she moved to the Golden Living Center in Mobridge, SD, and made it her home for the remainder of her life. She continued being a valuable resource of the history of the Firesteel, Timber Lake and Isabel areas. People often stopped at the house, wrote letters or sent emails (yes, she started using a computer in her late 80's) to ask her about their pioneer families. She always had a great love for the country and people of this area and was so proud to be a part of building and preserving it. She passed away at the Center on Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2010.
She is survived by her children, Thomas (Clara Ann) Herman of Timber Lake, SD, Jane (Allen) Scheef of Racine, WI, Gerald (Barbara) Herman of Brigham City, UT, Kathy (Dennis) Bresee of Moorhead, MN, and Jay (Audrey) Herman of Mandan, ND, 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Alvin, brother, George Vander Mark and his wife, Christie. |
