She was born July 22, 1913, in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, to Adam and Beata (Paul) Schmidt. She moved to North Dakota in 1915 and attended North Dakota schools. On Oct. 18, 1932, she married Marcus Thomas Reis and they moved to Washington in 1941, where she attended Clark College. She moved to Longview in 1996 after living in Vancouver for 20 years. Mrs. Reis was a homemaker and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She had an incredible memory and sense of humor, a wonderful smile and a great disposition. She had a talent for cooking and baking, especially German food. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, entertaining her many friends and travel. She and her husband spent several winters in Hemet, Calif. She was a member of the Germans from Russia Heritage Society and St. Rose Catholic Church, active in the Altar Society, St. Joseph Circle and Legion of Mary. She is survived by four sons, Vernon Reis of Browns Point, Wash., James Reis of New Port Rickie, Fla., Robert Reis of Arlington, Wash., and Larry Reis of Federal Way, Wash.; a daughter, Sharon Almer of Longview; a brother, Peter Schmidt of Aberdeen, S.D.; a sister, Anne Allmaras of New Rockford, N.D.; her caregiver, Roger Almer of Longview; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Reis was preceded in death by her husband Sept. 30, 1990; a brother, Michael Schmidt; and three sisters, Rose Sablovitch, Helen Vetter and Leona Hertel. The rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday and the funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Rose Catholic Church. The Rev. K. Scott Connolly will officiate. Private interment will take place at St. James Acre Cemetery in Vancouver. Visitation will be held Thursday after the rosary at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Rose Catholic Church, 2571 Nichols Blvd., Longview, WA 98632 or the Community Home Health and Hospice, P.O. Box 2067, Longview, WA 98632. Arrangements are by Dahl-McVicker Funeral Home.
