William Zielke, born in West Prussia, Germany, in 1858, came to the United States by boat with his mother, three brothers and four sisters at a young age. The family lived in Illinois, then Easter Nebraska. The land in Cheyenne County Kansas was opened for homesteads. William, his mother, one sister and three brothers came in 1885 and each homesteaded a quarter of land near Bird City. A 12x12 house was built for them to live in until each could prepare a sod house, a tarpaper shack or dugout to live in on his own quarter of land. William was married to Mary (Bohnen) Zielke in 1881. Mary was born in Chester, Illinois. After a number of moves the family settled on land eight miles south of St. Francis. To this union nine children were born: Augusta (Zielke) Nelson 1882-1983 100 years 2 months 9 children Minnie (Zielke) Althouse 1885-1985 99 years 9 months 2 children Albert Zielke 1887-1973 86 years a batchelor Henry Zielke 1889-1968 79 years m: Olga Fleming 3 children Caroline (Zielke) Bereuter 1894 one son still living Mary Zielke died of Diphtheria at a very young age. Herman Zielke 1899-1970 m: Clara Fleming 1 son Arthur Zielke 1902-1986 m: Vera Nicholson 2 sons George Zielke 1904-1986 m: Minnie Andrews 3 sons, 3 daughters Herman, Arthur and George were born on the farm south of St. Francis. George worked his way through high school by washing dishes at the Quigly eating house. He boarded at Mrs. Johnson's. Dallas Johnson played football on the same team with George Zielke. After graduation from high school in 1924, George rented land and started farming for himself. In 1928, George met Minnie Andrews. When Minnie graduated, the couple were married in 1930 and moved to the Trout place near Bird City, living in a basement. There was a cistern but the water had to be packed out. We raised a bumper crop of corn that year. The farm changed hands, so we rented the Briscoe Beamer farm for two years. That was the year of the big blizzard, March 1931. Many people whose cattle followed the storm were found many miles to the south. Two daughters were born while we lived there. Briscoe Beamer decided he would try farming his place the next year, so we moved to the Moberly farm near Cough Valley. He did not want to rent to us the next year so we had a public sale, packed our things, and while I stayed with my parents, George, my dad and brother, Glenn, went west pulling one of the first trailer houses seen on the highway. Their destination was Willamette Valley Oregon. Our first sons was born during this time. George bout 35 acres near Aumsville, Oregon and built a double garage for us to live in. After four months he returned to truck the household goods to our new home. A second son was born there. After seven years we moved to eastern Oregon near Harper. There we lived in a dugout and hauled water for a year. We then bought a small farm and lived in a 14x16 homesteaders shack with a tent for bedrooms. We again hauled water for two years until we could get a well drilled and a three room cabin dwelling built. In 1947 we added a bedroom. A daughter and a son were born while we resided at Harper, Oregon. In 1950, irrigation was introduced to the Columbia Basin in Washington State, so off to pioneer once again. We drilled a well, fixed a nice basement and for the first time had electricity and indoor plumbing. We completed our house in 1953. Farming, milking cows and feeding calves kept us busy. Our four older children married. George worked out as a school custodian for fourteen years. We sold the farm in 1964, took a house in town as part payment. It was not long after we moved into town that George had to have a garden so he could keep busy. One third of an acre kept us both very busy. We sold vegetables at a "Farmers Market" held on Saturdays during summers. George became ill the summer of 1982. ------------------------------------ David P. Andrews was born May 25, 1868, at Troy, Kansas. His family moved to Nebraska, later to Colorado near Hale before coming to Cheyenne County and taking a tree claim. A sod house was their dwelling. David married Mae Wilson, who died in January 1904. In December 1904, he brought his new bride, Nettie J. Knight Andrews, born December 18, 1885, from Phillips County, Kansas to his homestead southeast of Jaqua. They traveled by train to Kanarado where his father Hugh Andrews, met the couple with the lumber wagon to complete the cold journey. Two sons, Glenn and Ray, were born in the sod house. In February 1909 they relocated Across the road about one-fourth mile into a three room frame house where they resided until 1935. Their eleven children are still living; Glenn, Ray, Minnie Zielke, Vera Allen, Forest, Thomas, Dorothy Morris, Charles, Lena Beilke, Lois Cassard and Ruth Smith. Water was carried in pails to the house. Clothing was washed in a galvanized tub on a washboard using homemade soap and hung out on a line to dry. We usually had vegetables and corm from our garden. Chickens were raised for meat and eggs. As time went by and we children were eating more food it was necessary to bake a large oven full of bread each day, and twice on Saturday so we wouldn't have to bake on Sunday. We went to Jaqua to purchase groceries until Jaqua closed in 1918. After that we had to go by lumber wagon to St. Francis, an 18 mile journey one way. The wagon was usually loaded with grain going to St. Francis, returning with a load of coal, flour and other groceries. We children walked one and three quarter mile to Battle Creek school. Sophia (Rust) Boll is one of our well remembered teachers. After it was determined we were not in the Battle Creek School District we had to attend Jaqua school which was much further away. We drove a team and wagon when they were available and if not, we had to walk across a huge pasture for about four miles to get to school. In 1920, the folks had a two room addition built to use a kitchen and living/dining room. In the early spring of 1921 the nine children had whooping cough. Glenn washed dishes at the Leo Handwork Cafe so he could attend high school. He was on the stock judging team which went to Hays, Kansas. There, he was exposed to Red Measles, bringing them home to the family. All ten children had their bout with the measles, in the meantime, baby sister Ruth arrived. I, Minne Andrews, attended high school, working as a baby sitter for Gertie Handwork, to earn money for my expenses. After two years in school, I had to remain home as assist with the work so Vera could finish the 8th grade. My junior year, I worked a the Cleland home. I did not work out my senior year. Wilma Catt (Kitty VanLaningham) and I were batchelorettes and lived in two rooms of the house Grandfather Hugh Andrews had purchased and lived in until he passed away in the fall of 1927. The other two rooms were rented to Emel Lamps and his wife Martha (Lucas) Lamp. The dustbowl was a problem. The feed bundles were filled with dirt and when put into the haymow you were scarcely able to breathe. I was decided it was a hopeless situation because the older children had moved away leaving only the younger to help out. In April 1935, after holding a public sale, the family loaded into the car and headed west to the Willamette Valley, Oregon. There was harvest work there - picking strawberries, beans and fruit. The folks settled near Maculay, Oregon on the Staley place which was in orchard. David Andrews passed away December 1939. Nettie (Knight) Andrews moved into Salem, Oregon and each of the children sought employment and completed school. When the war broke out in 1941, Forest Andrews joined the Army and was chosen to be a medic. Thomas Andrews joined the Navy and Charles Andrews went to the Air Force and became a pilot ferrying planes from the U.S. to the war zone in the East. As long as mother (Nettie Andrews) was able to care for herself, she lived in an apartment. She later resided in a nursing home and in 1969, went to be with her daughter, Vera Allen, at Ilanson, Idaho. Nettie passed away in April 1971.
