Born on December 10, 1912 to Theodore and Clarissa French of Janesville, Fern had four older brothers and eight younger siblings. Despite 13 children at the French table, there was always room for one more, as many of the neighbors and cousins were welcome. Born on December 10, 1912 to Theodore and Clarissa French of Janesville, Fern had four older brothers and eight younger siblings. Despite 13 children at the French table, there was always room for one more, as many of the neighbors and cousins were welcome. Fern graduated from Lassen High School in 1932 and left to stay with family in Oakland. Fern's mother, Clarissa, wanted her eldest daughter to have a better life than she and thought Fern would find that in the city. A country girl at heart, Fern returned a year later. She became a nanny for a family at Walker Mine, where she met her husband, Joseph "Pal" Stampfli. As a local barber, Pal traveled to the mine every week to give haircuts to local residents and miners. A relationship quickly kindled and in 1936 they were married. The couple moved to Greenville along with one of Pal's two sons from a previous marriage, Edward. Fern and Pal had one son together, Robert Leo, who passed away at the age of 21. Fern kept busy in the home and was an avid quilter. She hand-quilted over 80 quilts during her lifetime. She was also very active in the Rebecca Lodge. Fern and Pal built "Pal's Court" which kept their home busy with visitors and tenants, who liked to drop by for a chat. This past summer Fern attended the Lassen High School Alumni Reunion as the eldest living alumni, a privilege of which she was quite proud. All her life, Fern prided herself on beginning each day with her signature ladylike attire of dress, stockings, heels, jewelry, hair done and makeup set. Fern was always strong and giving to all around her. She helped as many as she could throughout her life. Never one to say an unkind word, she was positive and believed that things would always work out. She greeted everyone with a smile, whether she could remember their name or not; however, she usually could, as well as their parent's names, and grandparent's names... Though Mill Street in Greenville was her residence for over 76 years, home to Fern was always in Janesville. Every chance she got she would travel to the "home place" where she and siblings were all born and which is still in the family. It meant so much to be able to return home.
