Burial was in the church cemetery. Mrs. Kirby died Monday night in a local hospital after a brief illness. She was 53. Mrs. Kirby, the former Miss Mintie Simpson of Laurens, was born December 16, 1899, a daughter of the late James M. and Sarah Armstrong Simpson, both of Laurens County. She was a graduate of Hickory Tavern High School, near Laurens and Limestone College. She also attended Anderson College. Mrs. Kirby was a school teacher and had spent 24 years teaching. She taught two years in Aiken County and several years in Horry County before coming to Oak Grove, there she had taught for the past 17 years. She was a member of the Trinity Methodist Church of Laurens, but attended the Elim Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Clinton D. Kirby of Timmonsville; four sisters, Mrs. W. H. Brown of Greenwood, Mrs. Cora S. Wallace, Mrs. R. L. Bu____ and Miss Bonnie Simpson, or all Laurens; tow brothers, M.W. Simpson of Charleston and C.C. Simpson of Gray Court; six stepdaughters; Mr. Eugene Isgelt and Mrs. Ludie Dosier, both of Florence, Mrs. Cullie Yarborough of Effingham, Mrs. Fred Jernigan and Mrs. Leonard Jeffords, both of Timmonsville, and Mrs. Lewis Hill of Anderson; three stepsons, Marvin Kirby of Walterboro, Freeland Kirby of Timmonsville and Lindburg Kirby of the U.S. Air Force. Pallbearers were nephews Clarence Brown, Randall Kirby, Leonard Jeffords, Ruise Hill, Ludy Dozier and Edward Thornbrew. Waters Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
