Read More	From the Clinton Gazette, Saturday, June 29, 1901: "Minton Adkins Was Killed By A Train Here On Monday Morning" Lived Over Two Hours After The Accident--Home Was In Jellico A sad accident occurred near the Southern Railway Depot here last Monday morning when Minton Adkins was killed by a passenger train, No. 12, going to Knoxville. Mr. Adkins was from Jellico and was the sales agent for the Whitley Coal Company at that place. He was on his way to Knoxville and had stepped off the train here to look at the coal chute. It is supposed he thought the train would wait here for some little time for the Harriman train, which is usually carried from here to Knoxville by the Jellico train. But the Jellico train, being about an hour late, the Harriman train had come and gone into Knoxville. When the Jellico train started to leave it pulled out faster than usual, and by the time it got to where he attempted to catch it, it was running at a very rapid speed. As the train passed him, he made two attempts to catch it and in making the second effort he was thrown down and bystanders say as he fell he was struck in the head by the steps of the sleeping car. After he was knocked to the ground, and probably being knocked unconscious, he raised his head, and when he did so, he was struck the second time in the head by the oil box or the springs of the trucks of the sleeper. He was picked up in an unconscious condition and carried to Dr. Medaris' office, where he and Dr. Hall waited on him and endeavored to relieve his suffering. It was found that his skull was mashed in the back and front of his head and his brain was oozing out. The doctors worked on him for something over an hour and succeeded in raising the skull from off the brain giving the patient some relief. When this was done the physicians thought he had a chance of recovery, and no doubt would have gotten better, but for a hemorrhage in the base of the brain which paralyzed his breathing qualities, death ensuing immediately at 10:15 o'clock. Mr. Adkins never gained consciousness and did not speak a word from the time he was struck by the train. Mr. Adkins' relatives at Jellico were notified of the horrible accident, and his uncle, J. M. Adkins, accompanied with some friends, came to Clinton on the afternoon train and took the body of the dead man to Knoxville, where it was prepared for burial by E.B. Mann & Co, undertakers, and shipped back to Jellico that night. Mr. Adkins was 24 years of age and had been connected with the Whitley Coal Co. for a number of years, first as a clerk in the company's office, and later as a sales agent. Parties who knew him give him a very high recommendation and state that he was an energetic and prosperous young man. There was found on his person a watch, about $12 in cash and notes amounting to something over $400. He also had a Southern Railway pass, which led to his identification.
