She is survived by her husband of more than 50 years, Lt. Col. James Palmer Bruner, Jr. (USAF-Ret), four children: James Palmer Bruner III and wife Terri, Robert Kincaid Bruner, MD and wife Leigh, Juliet Bruner Fredericks, and Charles Norman Bruner; brother, Robert Wade McDonald and wife Catherine of Wilmington, NC; her beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Visitation will be held at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home on St. Mary's Street on Friday, November 2 from 7-9 p.m. Services will be held at White Memorial Presbyterian Church in Raleigh at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 3. Inurnment will follow in Oakwoo Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 5607 Shadowbrook Drive in Raleigh following the memorial service. Boots was born on September 18, 1923 in Raleigh to Norman Capel and Esther Riggan McDonald. She attended Broughton High School and St. Mary's Junior College in Raleigh. In 1941 (at the age of 18) her pioneering spirit led to her opening the McDonald Studio of Dance on Everett Avenue where many of Raleigh's children learned to dance. After she and Jim married, she embarked on an exciting life as a military wife, raising a family all over the world. Traveling with Jim and her children, she continued to teach dance and serve in varying capacities with Officers Wives' Clubs and other organi- zations, including serving as President of the Officers Wives' Clubs at Bergstrom AFB in Austin, Texas. Upon Jim's retirement, they returned to Raleigh where she resumed teaching with her dear friend, James Leocarta, at the Leocarta School of Dance. She choreographed many musicals at the Raleigh Little Theatre, Village Dinner Theatre, St. Mary's, and many others. After more than 30 years of dance, she made a career change and became a casting agent and business owner of Talent Unlimited, and later Actors Unlimited. She represented numerous professional actors and actresses, with a special interest in child actors, until her retirement in 1997. The family request that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Make-a-Wish Foundation or a children's charity of your choice, to honor Boots' love of children.
