(Thurber) McDonald, 70, Dies: Owner of Insurance business and Quaker Leader. Miriam (Thurber) McDonald, LUTCF, of Clemons, owned her own insurance company selling personal needs insurance for over 20 years. After working with her husband Wayne on the farm for over 30 years, she began her insurance career which she thoroughly enjoyed having sold two policies just hours before the start of her last hospitalization. In her last days, she said death would be her final victory over cancer which had challenged so much of her life while she successfully developed her insurance business. In her final days she guided her family to the passage in II Timothy, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course. I have kept the faith." Over her 20 years in the insurance business she received numerous awards for sales and quality. She was a board member of the Central Iowa Association of Life Underwriters and received the Agent of the Year Award. She took pride in her being an agent who was personally involved in her client's lives, many of whom were her personal friends. Miriam was an international leader in Friends United Meeting, an international association of Friends (Quaker) Churches. Her passion was global ministries where she was an advocate of initiatives in Mexico, Ramallah in the West Bank, North of Jerusalem and East Africa. From her early involvment in missions, she was active in the Iowa Yearly Meeting of Friends Churches establishing new programs in Mexico. She then undertook leadership positions in the Friends United Metting where she chaired the Global Ministires Board, served as vice-chair of Friends United Meeting and served on the board until she tendered her resignation last week. During her leadership in Friends United Meeting she was very active in the support of medical and educational programs in East African Countries. She was an advocate of increasing recognition of the East African Friends Church and was recognized by East African Friends as the" mother of the Yearly Meetings;" Today there are as many members of the Friends (Quaker) Churches in Africa as there are in the United States. In the local community she was active in the Soroptomists International in Marshalltown, Marshalltown Area Chamber of Commerce, Bangor-Liberty Friends Church, Bangor United Society of Friends Women and Iowa Yearly Meeting of Friends. Raised on a farm east of Clemons, she and Wayne made their home on a farm outside of Clemons. She regarded her greatest accomplishments as the successes of her marriage of 52 years, her children, the faith they all shared and the friends she treasured. Miriam graduated from the Liscomb High School, attended the University of Northern Iowa and was a graduated of Life Underwriters Training Council receiving fellowship designation. Miriam is survived by her husband Wayne, children Douglass of Cincinnatti, Ohio, Sarah Higgins of Ankeny, and Steve and Scott both of Indianapolis, sister Doris Hammer of Denver, CO., grandchildren: Andrea, Matthew, Timothy, Paul, Maddie and Blake McDonald and Anna Higgins. Celebration of Miriam's life will be held at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, January 11th, at the Bangor Liberty Friends Church with burial in the Liscomb Cemetery. Visitation at the church Monday from 5-7:00 p.m. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Miriam and her family.
