The telegraph and postal service... Read More	DEATH OF MIRIAM WALTERS Buried Tuesday Afternoon - Many Friends Attend Funeral Miriam Walters, the 15-year-old daughter of Rev. and Mrs. T.W. Walters, departed this life Saturday afternoon, March 27, falling before an attack of cerebro spinal meningitis. The Gazette last week told of her serious condition and expressed the hope, faint though it was, of her ultimate recovery. As a dernier resort the only known relief or cure for the disease, Flexer's serum, a recent discovery which is being provided by the Rockefeller Institute of New York, was procured and used after the third day's treatment. The telegraph and postal service was used to secure the serum, and after its arrival in Spokane a special car on the Inland line was chartered to bring it to Colfax, all in haste, but the dread disease had taken a firm hold and medical science was of no avail. The funeral took place Tuesday afternoon from the Congregational Church, Rev. J. Herbert Bainton officiating, assisted by Rev. R.S. Hannah. It was one of the largest ever witnessed in Colfax. The church was crowded to the doors, representing every age and walk of life. The casket was covered with wreaths of flowers, brought by friends and family. Six young men of about age of Miriam acted as pall-bearers, and six young ladies, former school mates, were honorary pallbearers. Following are the names of the 12 pallbearers: Mary Wyman, Hazel Powell, Naomie Morley, Geraldine Lewis, Willene Ellis, Mildred Davis, Earl Thompson, Art Chapmen, Cedric DePledge, Horace Kincaid, Leon Ettinger and Fred Hargrave. Miriam Walters would have been 15 years old the 8th of next month. She was born in Colfax. Her body was placed beside that of two other children buried in Colfax Cemetery 20 years ago by Mr. and Mrs. Walters, the two having passed away with diphtheria within two weeks of each other. This last sorrow comes as a severe affliction, the baby of the family, the bud just beginning to unfold its leaves, being called unexpectedly, almost without warning. The father and mother, the brother and sister and other relatives have the sincere sympathy of the entire community.
