He was born to the late Jacoba and Katherine (Van Ochten) Hages on November 21, 1921 in Essexville and has resided in Bay City most of his life. Read More	HAGES, MITCHELL BAY CITY Mitchell G. Hages, age 92 years, passed away on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at the Carriage House of Bay City. He was born to the late Jacoba and Katherine (Van Ochten) Hages on November 21, 1921 in Essexville and has resided in Bay City most of his life. Mitch married the former Janice Gatza on December 5, 1975 who survives him. He was a decorated veteran of World War II proudly serving his country for 39 months in the Navy Submarine Service as a First Class Torpedoman. He received a Presidential Citation and honors from Admiral of the Navy, C. W. Nimitz. Mitch was employed at Wieland Furniture Company and was the former owner of Professional Upholstery until his retirement. He was a hard worker and was scrupulous to make sure everything was done right. Mitch was a deer hunter for 62 years without ever missing a year. An avid golfer, he got his first hole-in-one at age 85. He was a faithful Detroit Tigers fan, enjoyed traveling and playing cards. Mitch was a very witty guy who had a great sense of humor, and was always willing to help anyone. He loved his family and treasured his grandchildren and great-granddaughter. Mitch was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church where he served as an usher, the K of C Council 3590 where he volunteered many hours and worked at the monthly fish fries. He was also a member of the League of Catholic Women and Men, the Submarine Veterans of World War II, the Holland Club, the Escolar Base and the American Legion. Surviving besides his loving wife are two sons and a daughter: Barry (Kathy) Hages of Ada, MI, Gordon (April) Hages of Olathe, KS, Diane (Don) Zielinski of Bay City; six grandchildren: Michael (Elizabeth) Hages, Melissa (Jeff) Gehl, Garrett Hages, Gabrielle Hages, Kyle Zielinski, Kori Stack; great-granddaughter: Colette Hages; brother-in-law: Tom (Brenda) Gatza; sister-in-law: Sarah Hages; special niece, Barb (Tom Mehnert), and many nieces, nephews and friends. Besides his parents, Mitch was predeceased by five sisters and two brothers: Mabel Lossing, Alberta Groulx, Angeline Frudenstein, Margaret French, Rachel Roszatycki (his twin), Roland and Craven Hages; his father-in-law and mother-in-law: Stanley and Florence Gatza; and brother-in-law: Richard Gatza. Mitch's family would lie to express sincere thanks to Dr. Rajesh Dandamudi and Dr. Saad Ahmad for their compassionate care of him. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 10:00 am at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Mitch will lie in state in church Thursday after 9:00 am. Rev. James Carlson will preside and entombment will follow in St. Patrick Mausoleum with military rites under the auspices of the Bay County Veterans Council. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to St. Vincent de Paul Church, St. Jude Children's Hospital, McLaren Hospice or their favorite charity. Visiting hours with the family will be Wednesday from 2:00 pm until 8:00 pm, with the Vigil Prayer Service at 7:00 pm at the W. A. Trahan Funeral Chapel.
