Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Monticello. Rev. Donald Bruggemann will officiate at the service. Thoughts, memories and condolences may be left at www.goettschonline.com Married to William on April 28, 1949, Monica was a constant source of love and solace for her seven children, David (Laura) of Fort Bragg CA, Elaine (Nick Hammes) of Sigourney, IA, Paul, Lois (John Hallberg) of Nashville, MI, Janice of Lexington, VA, Mark (Diane) on the family farm at Sand Springs, and Coleen (Nancy), of Jefferson City, MO. Six boys and three girls knew her as Granma Welter. There are two great-granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 55 years Bill; a son Paul; a sister Irene Pierce and two brothers Lawrence and George Leytem. Monica was born in Cascade on February 9, 1928, daughter of Catherine and Raymond Leytem. She grew up on a county-line farm north of Monticello, where she attended Sacred Heart schools. She was a member of the team girl's basketball team which went to State in 1946. Receiving a teaching credential from Iowa State Normal School at Cedar Falls, she taught for a year at Hardscrabble. While living at her parents farm, she was charmed by a custom hay baler, William (Bill) Henry Welter, who knew a good thing when he saw it. She was a full-time member of the family farm; milking cows, raising the garden and the kids. Despite the challenges, she cannot be remembered as ever having raised her voice. Her rhubarb patch was the source of an endless supply of custard pies and she kept the family in home-made bread. She found time for artistic exploration in ceramics, basket weaving, whittling, Quilting and calligraphy. More of her time became her own when she and Bill moved to town in 1990. Her enthusiasm for gardening led to her involvement with the Riverside Garden and her athleticism again revealed itself in her fondness for golf and bowling. Devoted to the Church her entire life, she volunteered at Sacred Heart in many capacities, including counting the weekly collection. The family recognizes and is grateful for the kind and compassionate care given to Monica by Silvercrest of Anamosa and Saint Luke's Hospice. Memorials in Monica's name can be given to Riverside Gardens, Monticello, Saint Luke's Hospice, and the Alzheimer's Association. Goettsch, Inc. Funeral Home
