Born March 18, 1915 in Kinsley, Kansas to Isadore Henry and Mary Gertrude (Oster) Burkhart, she attended Saints Peter and Paul parochial school north of Kinsley and high school in Offerle, Kansas. Born March 18, 1915 in Kinsley, Kansas to Isadore Henry and Mary Gertrude (Oster) Burkhart, she attended Saints Peter and Paul parochial school north of Kinsley and high school in Offerle, Kansas. After her mother died in 1931, Monica became responsible for their household, supporting her Dad and caring for her younger siblings. In 1940 she and three girlfriends set off for adventure, ending up in Los Angeles, California, and Monica stayed there to work in the Famous Farmers Market in Hollywood. Her friend Francis “Bus”Reilley from Selden, Kansas followed her to California, where they were married on March 5, 1941. They settled in Santa Monica, where their two children James and Sharon were born, and while there, hosted several family members who were working on the war effort. In 1945, they moved to Atwood, Kansas and lived there until Bus passed away in 1952. After his death, she moved to Syracuse, Kansas to be closer to her brothers Leon and Paul Burkhart, and in August of 1953 bought the Catalina Fashion and Beauty Salon. She sold that shop in 1963, and took a job as supervisor at the Syracuse Drug Store before moving to Wichita, Kansas in 1973. She continued her career in retail, working at Cooper’s China and Gift Shop, Darlo’s Intimate Apparel, and Dillards until she semi-retired and moved to Garden City in 1985. She managed the gift shop in St. Catherine’s Hospital for the Belles of St. Catherine for three years, then subsequently worked at the St. Catherine’s Home Health store for many years. Always the volunteer, she was a member of the Daughters of Isabella and St. Dominic’s Altar Society, belonged to the Finney County Retired Senior Volunteer Program, and volunteered regularly at St. Catherine Hospital. She was also a greeter at St. Dominic and a regular at Perpetual Adoration in the hospital chapel. Monica rarely sat still, and loved working with her hands. She spent her time sewing, making latch hook rugs, crocheting afghans, and putting together photo albums for each of her children and grandchildren. She was also an avid coin collector, bridge player and loved clipping and saving news articles for her family. One of her most favorite hobbies was gardening, and she spent many hours in her backyard taking care of her flowers. She loved her family dearly and always looked forward to seeing not only her kids, but her many grandchildren and great grandchildren, and was blessed with the proximity of several of her great grandchildren in their youngest years. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her daughter Sharon Lampe of Syracuse, two sisters: Gertrude Shobe of Hutchinson and Celesta Burkhart of Kinsley; four brothers: Leon Burkhart of Green Valley, Arizona (formerly of Syracuse KS), Paul Burkhart of Syracuse, Elred Burkhart of Hutchinson, and Isidore “Burk” Burkhart of Denver CO; and a grandson Mark Lampe of Kendall, Kansas. She is survived by her son James (JT) Reilley of Atlanta, GA, five grandchildren: Karin (Paul) Drees, Mary Jo Lampe, Lori Lampe, Lynne Lampe Ladner, and Matthew (Crystal) Lampe; nine great grandchildren: Bonnie, Laura, Monica, Kristina, Trevor, Hannah, Benjamin, Sarah and Rebekah; and many beloved nieces and nephews. The services Monica Reilley are as follows: Location: St. Raphael's Catholic Church, Syracuse KS Rosary at 7pm MST Friday 2/17/17 Funeral at 10:30am MST Saturday 2/18/17 Burial to follow at Syracuse KS cemetery No visitation.
