Monica was born July 22, 1918, in Buck Grove, Iowa, to the late John and Sarah (McAndrews) Smith. She graduated from Manilla, Iowa High School in 1936. Monica married Harold M. The Kleffmans made their home in Portsmouth, Iowa, for many years before moving to Harlan in 1983. Monica taught country school; taught at St. Mary's Catholic School in Portsmouth, Iowa for 7 years; and was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Harlan. In addition to her parents, Monica was preceded in death by her husband, Harold M. Kleffman in 2001; sons, James Joseph Kleffman in infancy, Joseph F. Kleffman in 2008; sisters, Catherine Jokerst, Margaret F. Gross; brothers, John, William J., Joseph, Francis and Gene Smith. Monica is survived by her children, Sarah M. Kleffman of Harlan, Mary T. Schaer of Ankeny, Iowa, Theresa (Tom) Jacobs of Harlan, Martha (Al) Rios of Omaha, John Kleffman of Harlan, Thomas M. (Tracy) Kleffman of Portsmouth, Iowa, Michael (Julie) Kleffman of Harlan; 6 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Marian Smith of Avoca, Iowa, Sally Smith of Earling, Iowa; many nieces, nephews and friends. 9 Dec Tuesday Visitation 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM Wake service at 7:00 p.m. St. Michael's Catholic Church Harlan, Iowa, United States 10 Dec Wednesday Funeral Mass 11:00 AM St. Michael's Catholic Church Harlan, Iowa, United States Father John Frost, pastor, as the celebrant.
