Hiram Spencer of near Kirby received official notification Sunday of the death of his son, Monroe Spencer, who was killed in action, October 27th. Early Friday morning the bodies of Serg. Monroe J. Spencer and Corp. Christie E. Wilson, two Shelby county young men who lost their lives in the defense of their country, were brought in to Shelbina on an early morning train and were later taken to their respective homes. Monroe J. Spencer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Spencer, of Kirby, was born in Shelby county, June 18, 1894, and was killed in a dugout, by an exploding shell, at Gesnes, France, on the evening of October 27, 1918. He serves as a Sergeant of Co. C., 354 Inf., 89th Division. In addition to his parents, he is survived by one sister, Mrs. Horace Rice, of Shelbyville. Funeral services were held at the Christian church in Shelbyville Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. F.M. Branic. Burial in the Shelbyville I.O.O.F. cemetery. Services under the auspices of the LaBelle Post of the American Legion. (Contributed by Paula D)
