He lived there until he was seven years old, came with his parents to Mower County, near Adams, Minnesota. In 1885 a friend, John Stromme, came with Mons to Highland Township, where Mons filed on 80 acres of land. On April 7, 1885, Mons married Olena Dahle, one of his schoolmates, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Dahle. They were married at Little Cedar Lutheran Church in Adams, MN. They lived in Highland for seven years, then moved to Clark County and purchased a free claim, where they lived for 26 years. After that they moved to Wallace. Mons was in the State Legislature for one term while in Day County and for two terms while in Clark County. From 1919 to 1926, he was buying cattle for shipping associations. The children of Mons and Olena were: Inga, who married Bill Fetterly; Melvin, who married Julia Johnson; Arthur, who married Ethel Henretty; Henry, who married Clara Amundson; Mabel, who married Joe Ess; Eddie, who married Caroline Froslie; Clarence, who married Anna Mallgren; and William, who married Elsie. Mons and Olena were married 71 years. Mons had his 100th birthday in Wallace Calvary Church in November of 1959. Olena was 92 when she died. Madison, Minn. - Mr. and Mrs. Mons Peterson observed their 70th wedding anniversary at the Lutheran Old People's Home here today. Mr. Peterson, 95, was a South Dakota State legislator in 1915. Mrs. Peterson is 92. Both are able to get around and are in fair health. The couple was married at Lyle, Minn., April 7, 1885, and moved to Webster, S.D., two years later. In 1895, they homesteaded in Clark County, S.D. In 1919 they moved to Wallace, S.D., where they remained until going to the Old People's Home on Oct. 19, 1953. Their children include Inga Fetterly, Wallace; Melvin, Henry and Eddie, Webster; Mrs. J. F. Ess, Madison, Minn.; Clarence, Dawson, Minn.; and Arthur, Minneapolis. There are 23 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren.
