Sherwood, and Lola Todd, told the biographical love story between the native princess Pocahontas and English soldier, explorer, colonial governor Captain John Smith during the early 17th Century. He was born in New York, New York, as Marvelle Cooper Mount to Henry Clay Mount and his wife, Catherine Whitton Marple Mount on July 12, 1891. He was educated locally and moved with his family to Center, Indiana, in 1900, and then to Allenhurst, New Jersey, in 1910. He then attended Columbia University in New York City, where after his studies, he qualified as a mining engineer. He was hired as a sales manager for the Texas Oil Company, which was based in New York. He then decided to pursue a career in the entertainment business. He began his career as a songwriter and actor in New York and eventually in Hollywood, California. He began his film career by working as an actor in bit parts alongside Pearl White between 1913 and 1914. He made his actual film debut playing 'Robert Gray' in "The Magpie" (1917). The film, which was directed by Edwin Stevens and written by George D. Smith, also starred Claude Cooper and Tina Marshall. He then pursued other interests for a time before turning to work behind the scenes as a film director, film producer, and screenwriter. His first film projects were, "Excess Baggage" (1920), "Rare Bits" (1920), "A Ringer For Dad" (1923), "Private--Keep Off" (1923), "Riders Up" (1924), "Monsieur Don't Care" (1924), "Benjamin Franklin" (1924), "Rip Van Winkle" (1924), "Ponce de Leon" (1924, in which he played the explorer who searched for the Fountain of Youth), "Hands Up!" (1926), "Behind The Front" (1926), and "Miss Brewster's Millions" (1926). He began working with Paramount Studios and later became a freelancer. He became a scenario writer and was promoted to a director after he was given a five-year contract with Famous-Players-Lasky in 1926. In his later years, he worked as a gag writer for comedian Bob Hope. He passed away from a heart attack while working with comedian Bob Hope on some film projects in London, England, on November 8, 1962, at the age of 71. He was cremated at Golders Green Crematorium in London, England, and his ashes were shipped to Pierce Brothers Mortuary in Hollywood, California. He was married twice first to actress Helen Elizabeth Oliver (AKA Mazie Oliver), from 1914 until they divorced in 1918, and second to actress Doris Hill (1905-1976), from September 21, 1935, until they divorced in 1950. The couple had two children together. His former wife, actress Doris Hill, two daughters, and three grandchildren, survived him.
