Description	:	Son of Major James Bean and Magdaline Seabert, he married Eliza Larrick. From the "Clan MacBean Family in North America, Vol. II, by Joseph S. Bean, page 138: "Born on the Bean Farm (in Winchester, Virginia), he inherited the Bean Smelter Farm and operated it for the 3rd generation of Beans until the Civil War. "He was a vehement defender of the Union at the time of the Civil War and for this the Confederates arrested him and (put) him in Salisbury Prison. His arrest was such an unpopular thing with the people that the authorities tried to get a 'hot potato' out of their hands by just opening the door and telling him to go home. He flatly refused this kind of deal and told them he would not go until they brought him to trial on their charges and freed him proper and legal. Few men lived long in the terrible conditions of that prison and he died there for a principle he believed in vehemently." He and his wife had six children, but most of them died in a diphtheria epidemic. His daughter, Jane, was the last survivor, and she eventually lost her mind grieving over the unjust imprisonment of her father. She was a patient at Western State Hospital for the Insane in Staunton, Virginia for most of her adult life, dying there in 1911. His children were: Jane, born 1843; died 1911; Mordecai Clay, born 1845; John, born 1847; Nathan (Nattie), born 1849; Annie, born 1851; and Judith, born 1855.
