Rudolph Wendling, a young automobile dealer of the town of Ryan, was driving the new Willis-Knight touring car, was also injured more or less. The three young men left Ryan Wednesday evening about 8:00 and drove to Manchester. They spent only a short time in Manchester and it is claimed that all three were riding in the front seat going back home. The particular place on the highway where this terrible accident occurred is a smooth roadbed, wide enough for three cars to travel abreast. The road is all that could be asked for a country highway. It is apparent that young Wendling did not have his head in the game when making the incline at a terrific speed. With three men crowded in the front seat he no double did not have free use of his arms, and when the car started to swing on him he was unable to keep it in the road. The tracks showed that the car was leaving the main traveled track and was headed for the ditch on the left side of the road, and in his effort to get back onto the main road his machine was turned over and righted itself again and ran into the ditch on the west side of the road. Mr. Doyle's body was picked up by Mr. Reilly's son, who heard the crash and rushed out to the road, and by the time a physician could get to the scene of the accident the young banker had passed away. Dr. Kehoe suffered a scalp wound which required twenty-six stitches to close, and for several days little hope was entertained for his recovery. It is believed now that his chances for life are much better. Mr. Wendling came out of the crash with minor injuries. The handsome new car is a wreck, and will have to be shipped to the factory and be rebuilt.The tragic death of the young banker has called forth the sympathy of host of friends. Mr. Doyle was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Doyle. He was a young man of exemplary habits and was popular among the people of Ryan.One would naturally suppose that a tragedy of this kind would deter men from driving motor cars at express train speed on country roads. We doubt if it will make the slightest impression on wreckless drivers. Mr. Doyle is dead, and through no fault of his. He went with his companion for a joy ride, little realizing that in an instance his life would be snuffed out. The driver of an automobile should be made to realize that persons riding with him have a right to expect that the driver will exercise at least some degree of common sense in the handling of his machine. Had Mr. Wendling planned to take ten minutes more time to make the trip from Manchester to Ryan, the chances are that the accident would never have happened, and Mr. Doyle would be alive today.Manchester Democrat - Manchester, Iowa - November 24, 1920
