Stone died at his home in Fairfield County, Saturday evening at 8 o'clock, in the 58th year of his age. He spent his life near his boyhood home and wielded influence for good. When the Confederate war come on he enlisted, and served to its close, He was orderly sergeant of his company and at one time, his captain being killed, was appointed for a time to serve as captain. He was well and favorably known in Fairfield and Chester counties. He was a good citizen, a kind neighbor and friend. In early life he joined Beaver Creek Baptist church, and was for long years one of the leading spirits in that church, serving as deacon & Sunday school superintendent. Burial services were held Monday afternoon conducted from the home. It was requested that it be brief and simple. Interment was in the Beaver Creek burying grounds. He is survived by his widow and the following children: J. C. Stone of Jackson Creek, Simpson L. Stone of Leeds R.F.D. No. 2, Maggie Stone, Leeds R.F.D. No. 2; Mamie Stone of Chester, and Mrs T. D. Cunningham of Leeds. --------------------------------------------- Moses was the son of Jacob Stone and Margaret Cockrell. I have noticed that most trees on ancestry have Moses F. Stone as thier son which is incorrect. There was a DNA Project which "confirmed" that Moses Franklin Stone c1823 is the son of Bentley Stone c1787. I also pointed out that Moses C Stone has Margaret Cockrells name on his death certificate and that he lived right next door to them for 20 years. He also named his first son Jacob and his first daughter Margaret. Moses was named for his maternal grandfather Moses Cockrell. It is also fair to mention that he is also buried in this cemetery with 3 of his siblings. Moses married Amanda M Tims about 1859. He entered the civil war on Jan 2, 1862, in the 23rd Regiment, South Carolina Infantry (Hatch's Coast Rangers)Company F. Rank in Second Lieutenant Rank out First Lieutenant. The family lived near the intersection of Stone Rd. and Hallseville Rd in Chester County near the Fairfield County border.
