Description	:	Moses H. Gardner told the army he was born in Morgantown, Berks County, Pennsylvania, while his death certificate claims Siddonsburg, Monaghan Township, York County, Pennsylvania. Neither was he sure if he were born in 1843, 1844, or 1845. The birth date shown here is from his death certificate and, as it turns out, agrees with his tombstone. In 1860, he was a laborer living in Monaghan Township and stood 5' 7" tall with dark hair and blue eyes. A Civil War veteran, he first enlisted in Harrisburg June 25, 1861, and mustered into federal service there August 10 as a private with Co. G, 12th Pennsylvania Reserves (41st Pa Inf), but deserted at Sharpsburg, Maryland, on October 21, 1862. He returned to Harrisburg where he enlisted with the regular army on December 11, 1862, and assigned to the 12th U.S. Infantry, serving in both companies G and H. Regular army enlistments then were generally for three years, but he received an honorable discharge September 4, 1864, at Petersburg, Virginia, by reason of "expiration of service," not for medical reasons. In 1889, the War Department changed the outstanding desertion charge to absent without leave and issued a discharge from the 12th Pennsylvania Reserves to date December 10, 1862, an action that was by no means unusual that long after the war. He married Mary Ann Wise June 15, 1866, and fathered Jennie (b. 09/23/67, d. 04/27/68) and Minnie (b. 09/27/68, d. 08/15/70). Mary died February 25, 1871, and he married Sarah Ellen Shultz February 6, 1872, in Pennsylvania, fathering George E. (b. 06/29/74), Mary Ida (b. 07/29/76), Margaret Hattie (b. 08/17/78), Elizabeth M. "Lizzie" (b. 06/22/80), Charlotte B. (b. 01/20/83 - married a Carter), and Emerson (b. 01/12/88). He moved his family to Kansas shortly after his second marriage and in 1878 lived in Osborne County and by 1900, in Topeka, Shawnee County. Sarah died September 15, 1921, from a skull fracture suffered in a fall from a porch step, and Moses then married Kentucky-born Kate E. Poffard June 5, 1924, in Orange County, California.
