The annotation "Ante 1800" is clearly incorrect in Matthew Martin's entry. Matthew Martin shows on the 1800 census in Georgetown District and the 1820 Williamsburg County, SC census near family members. In 1822, Matthew Martin, of Williamsburg County, SC, stated in an affidavit, attached to Bryant Rogers' Revolutionary War pension application, that he served with Bryant Rogers in Marion's 2nd South Carolina Regiment. This is incontrovertible proof that Matthew Martin of Williamsburg Co., SC was the same man who served, with his father, Moses Martin, in the 2nd South Carolina Regiment. Both Matthew and Moses Martin were given land grants in Marion District, SC for their service. Matthew Martin was later given grants in Georgetown District, on Sampit Creek and Black River, and lived on that land with his family. South Carolina Audited Accounts of Revolutionary Service shows: Matthew Martin, # 4807, from Craven County, Prince Frederick Parish, enlisted 4 Nov 1775 in the 2nd South Carolina Regiment, discharged 21 Apr 1777. ____________________________________________________________ Land grant, dated 7 June 1757, Moses Martin, 200 acres, on Maiden Down Swamp, Prince Frederick Parish, Craven County. Sergeant Moses Martin, of Prince Frederick Parish, Craven County, service 1759-1760 in the Cherokee War in Regiment commanded by Colonel George Gabriel Powell. This Regiment was composed of men from Cheraw and Georgetown District of Old Craven County. 1778 Petit Jurors, Prince Frederick Parish, Georgetown District: John Smith, Jr., Charles Moody, Samuel Smith, Hugh Smith, Joshua Barfield, Moses Martin, Matthew Martin, Henry Clark, et.al. 1786 Tax Returns, Prince George Parish, Captain Harrelson's Company: Moses Martin, 200 acres. 1788 Petition of Divers Inhabitants of the Little Pee Dee: Moses Martin, Matthew Martin. 1790 First US Census, Parish of Prince George, Georgetown District: Moses Martin, 2 males over age 16, 1 male under age 16, 4 females. ____________________________________________________________ Ramsay's History of South Carolina, on page 302, volume 2: "There have been many instances of longevity in the county between Little Pee Dee and Catfish Creek, about sixty miles north of Georgetown; six very old men died there since the year 1800. One of them, James Ford, died in or near 1804, at the age of one hundred years. The others are James Munnerlyn, Moses Martin, Rockingham Keene, Michael Mixori and William Watson, who all died upwards of eighty years of age, James Munnerlyn served in the office of Constable at eighty-six years, walked fifty miles to serve a process and returned home again in less than three days."
