On August 12, 1862, he enlisted with Company D, Seventh Regiment, Maryland Volunteer Infantry, Union Army, and served until May 31, 1865, when he was discharged at Arlington Heights, VA. His address at the time of enlistment was Sweet Brier, MD, where he was employed as a wheelwright. On August 12, 1862, he enlisted with Company D, Seventh Regiment, Maryland Volunteer Infantry, Union Army, and served until May 31, 1865, when he was discharged at Arlington Heights, VA. On October 11, 1863, he was promoted to sergeant. On February 1, 1865, he was made sergeant major and transferred to Company C, Seventh Regiment. From then to the time of discharge he served on Lieutenant Colonel S. Tennell's noncommissioned staff. After the war he returned to Baltimore County. Later in 1865 he moved to Upper Cross Roads in Harford County, where he was a farmer. On December 27, 1870, as a trustee of Goodwill Church, affiliated with the Church of the Evangelical Association of America, he helped secure an acre of "Good Will Purchased Again" as a place of worship. Other trustees were Albin Owings, Henry Hess, William Engle, and Theodore Gorrell. On June 1, 1885, he purchased from Charles A. Rutledge a 25-acre farm, part of "Hitchcocks Plains," Harford County, for $1160. He died April 18, 1920, near Faliston, MD. Burial was at Providence Cemetery. He married October 31, 1865, at Epson Chapel, Towson, MD, Hannah Elizabeth Walker, born July 24, 1846, in Harford County, MD, died February 1, 1929, in Harford County, daughter of Jesse and Victorine D. (Engle) Walker. Rev. Francis E. Church officiated at their wedding. Burial was at Providence Cemetery, located at Rouse 152 and Choate Road, Harford County.
