Gone Home - Moses Smith , aged 67 years, 8 months and 26 days, of heart paralysis; he was born near Bangor, Maine August 16, 1828, spent his boyhood there, was married to Miss Lydia Fenderson December 6, 1849, moved to Pella, Iowa in 1854; there his wife died in 1864; and on April 20, 1865, he was married to Mrs. Martha E. Hegwood, to whom were born six children, Emily C. (Mrs. J. I. York), Frank W., May L. (Mrs. J. M. Wray, formerly of Milford, Neb.), Allen J. (the last three are now near Paola, Kansas), William D., Millie A.; the last named died in infancy; the other five with the widow remain mourning his loss. Moses Smith served our country in Company F of the 40th Iowa Infantry, going into the war in the prime of his life, knowing full well its causes, needs, privations, sufferings and dangers; enlisting in August 1862, 34 years old, leaving a wife and little children meant patriotism; in August of 1863 he was discharged because of disabiility of his eyes from which he never recovered. The quiet old gentleman walking our streets highly respected by everyone will not soon be forgotten; he has resided in and near Milford for the past 10 years. He joined the G A R Post in Jan 1886, at Prairie City, Iowa, and transferred his membership by card to Winslow Post , May 7, 1886, and has served as Quartermaster, Surgeon, Junior and Senior Vice Commander repeatedly, was "color bearer" here every year since his arrival here, and was always a most faithful member of the Post. His death occurred Monday evening, 10:13 p.m., at his home, he feeling usually well and hoeing in his garden until 5 p.m. and eating a light supper at 6 p.m. Funeral services were held at the house by Rev. Munro under the auspices of the G A R Post Wednesday at 10 a.m.and burial made in Blue Mound cemetery. The bereaved ones have universal sympathy in their grief.
