Funeral services were held today at 10 a.m. at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Mt. Pleasant. Father Ed Fitzpatrick and Fr. Joseph Phung officiated. A light luncheon will follow the mass. A private family burial will be held at a later date in the Forest Home Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant. Those considering an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to a charity of the donor's choice in her memory. She was born Dec. 15, 1930, in Arlington. She was the daughter of Nelson LaVerne and Lila Pearl (Crofoot) Brooks. She moved with her family to Mt. Pleasant at a young age. She graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1951. On April 12, 1947, in Burlington, she was united in marriage to Earl Sherman Messer. He preceded her in death. She worked at Emerson Electric and Motorola in Mt. Pleasant. From 1972 until 1992, she worked at the Sears Catalog Store in Mt. Pleasant. She was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society and the Ladies For Charity. She enjoyed quilting, traveling and spending time with friends and family. She is survived by her sons, Steven Earl (Mary Ann) Messer, David Jeffrey (Val) Messer and Kent Lee Messer, all of Mt. Pleasant, and Keith Duane Messer of Burlington; five sisters, Beatrice M. Dannan of Linn Creek, Mo., Addie S. Simmons of Altoona, Evelyn Duffy and Erma Glanzman, both of Pittsburg, Calif., and Polly Aaron of Rogers, Ark.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Her parents, husband and two brothers, Earl and Everett Brooks preceded her in death. {MT pleasant News
