Filura was the great granddaughter of Barnabas Thurber Sr., who served as a Private in Capt. Samuel Sewell's Company, Col. Benjamin Hawes' Regiment from Sept. 25, 1777 to Oct. 30, 1777 on a secret expedition during the Revolutionary War. Filura Thurber's paternal grandparents were: Barnabas Thurber Jr., b. Mar. 5, 1848 in East Haven, VT. John Walter & Eunice Blakesley marr. Jul. 28, 1803 in Burke, VT.) Filura was one of eight children born to Aramel / Oramel 'Lyman' Winslow Thurber, a laborer, b. Nov. 24, 1804 in Burke, Caledonia, VT. and d. Oct. 23, 1875 in Columbia, Michigan at the age of 71. He died a widower. & Charlotte Walter, b. Nov. 6, 1803 in East Haven, Essex, VT. Note: In the 1870 U.S. census, Lyman was living with Jacob & Ruth Perhamus and their daughter in Allen, Hillsdale, MI. Aramel / Oramel Lyman Winslow Thurber and Charlotte Walter Thurber's children were: 1. Flavilla Thurber, b. 1826- 2. Orilla Orrinda Thurber, b. 1828 3. Filura Mary (Marinda?) Thurber, b. Jan. 6, 1831 in VT. and d. Nov. 25, 1890 in Los Angeles Co., CA. Filura married John Dunton. They had five children: Lyman Jesse, named after his grandfather; Mary E.; William, named after her brother; John Walter; and Cora Mary. 4. Silas Thurber, b. 1832-1863 5. Mary Thurber, b. 1834- 6. Almira Levina Thurber, b. Mar. 29, 1837 in OH. and d. Jun. 21, 1866 in Amboy, Hillsdale, MI. Almira L. Thurber and George Mack were married on March 14, 1858 in Reading-Hillsdale County, MI. Children: Silas, Orlando, Milo and Walter Mack 7. William Henry Thurber, b. Feb. 9, 1842 in Madison, Lake County, OH. and d. Aug. 22, 1913 in Quincy, Branch County, Michigan of general arteriosclerosis. A contributing cause was general inanition (exhaustion caused by lack of nourishment). William was a carpenter and was married when he died. (The informant was Abbie (Swartout) Thurber. Civil War Pension files list him as an invalid in 1863 and her as his widow in 1913.) In the 1850 U.S. census, 19 yr. old Phelura Dunton, b. abt. 1831 in VT., was living in Orwell, Ashtabula, OH. with her 36 yr. old husband, John Dunton, b. in VT. their 2 yr. old son, Lyman J. Dunton, b. in OH. Philura's 13 yr. old sister, Almira L. Thurber and Philura's 10 yr. old brother, Willm H. Thurber According to the 1860 U.S. census, 29 yr. old Philura Dunton, b. abt. 1831 in VT., was living in Lodomillo, Clayton, IA. with her 44 yr. old husband, John Dunton, b. in VT. 12 yr. old son, Lyman J. Dunton, b. in OH. 9 yr. old daughter, Mary E. Dunton 3 yr. old son, Wm Dunton, b. in IA. 4 mth. old son, John W. Dunton, b. in IA. and 30 yr. old Noyes Rosmond (Rossman), a farmer, b. in OH. John and Filura (Thurber) Dunton had five children: 1) Lyman Jesse Dunton, b. Feb. 3, 1848 in Orwell Twp., Ashtabula, Ohio, marr. Annice May Larrabee July 1, 1869 in Mt. Hope, Delaware Co., Iowa, and d. Nov. 25, 1927 in Lincoln, Kansas. 2) Mary E. Dunton, b. approx. 1851 in Orwell, Ashtabula Co., OH. and d. Dec. 11, 1892 in Santa Monica, L.A., CA. She married L.K. Marshall. 3) William Dunton, b. 1856/7 in Clayton Co., IA. 4) John Walter Dunton, b. Feb. 2, 1860 in Lodomillo, Clayton Co., Iowa, marr. abt 1881 in Lincoln, Kansas Mary Ellen Askey, d. Sept. 7, 1945 in Los Angeles, Ca. 5) Cora M. Dunton, b. June 22, 1864, marr. Aug. 5, 1883 Arthur G. Godfrey (divorced him and marr., second, James Edwin Tetlow), d. May 31, 1926, bur. in Hollywood Forever Cem., Los Angeles, CA. According to the Benton Co. Marriage License Register 1852-1883, Book C, Page 45, Amos Adams Bartholomew and Philura Thurber applied for a marriage license on Oct. 31, 1868. On Nov. 1, 1868, Filura 'Thurber' marr. Amos Adams Bartholomew in Vinton, Benton Co., Iowa. She was the third of his four wives. Amos was born in Dryden, N.Y. on Oct. 29, 1803 and died in Benton Co., Iowa, on Mar. 11, 1876, at the age of 72. On Mar. 20, 1870, Filura Bartholomew marr. John Collister in Vinton, Benton Co., IA. According to the June 21, 1870 census, 39 yr. old Filura, (listed as Flora, age 35), b. in VT., was 'keeping house' and living in Manchester, Delaware, Iowa with her 26 yr. old third husband, John Collister, who worked on the railroad track and was b. in Ireland and her two youngest children, 10 yr. old John Dunton, b. in IA. and 5 yr. old daughter, Cora Dunton, b. in IA. By the 1880 Census, Filura Collister was once again divorced, and living next door on one side to her son, Lyman J. Dunton and his family and on the other side to her ex-husband, John Dunton and their son John W. Dunton. Cora, age 16, had moved away, possibly to stay with her sister in California. Cora got married, in Los Angeles, at the age of 19 on August 5, 1883 in Los Angeles, Ca.. In 1882, John and Filura Dunton's daughter, Mary, was married to Lewis K. Marshall and living in Los Angeles, Ca. It was reported that Mary was seriously ill with tuberculosis and it was feared that she would not live. This was, undoubtedly, what prompted her mother, Filura and sister, Cora to move to California, arriving on Sept. 26, 1882 to remain there permanently. According to the Los Angeles Times, two of her brothers (Lyman and John) were to arrive during the coming winter to locate also. On October 19, 1882, it was feared that Mary would not survive until morning, but rallied a week later and lived another ten years. At some point, Filura married for a fourth time to a Mr. Bacon. According to her death certificate, Mrs. F. M. (Filura M.) Bacon, a widow, died on Nov. 25, 1890 at St. Paul's hospital in Los Angeles Ward 2, L. A., CA. of uterine cancer, at the age of 65 years, 10 mths. and 19 days. She was buried in Evergreen Cemetery on Nov. 26, 1890. Her attending physician was Gro. L. Cole, who was her doctor from Nov. 20 to Nov. 24, 1890. Filura is buried in the southeast half of the lot with her daughter, Mrs. Mary E. Marshall. Filura is listed as widowed. According to the cemetery records, she died at the age of 64 years, 10 months, 19 days, but this is incorrect. The months and days are correct, but according to family Bible, she was born in 1831, which would have made her almost 59 yrs., 10 mths. and 19 days when she died.
