I was in the 5th grade with Hilda and what I remember mostly about her was when she had typhoid and came back to school her hair was so pretty and curly. Her family moved from the house which had been my great-grandfather, Thomas Harveymd 2nd to Betty Sue Vaughan, parents of Maymie Harvey Dodd and her parents had rented the house which was across from Bethlehem United Methodist Church , Rt. 151, Roseland. My great grandfather had sold his property at Colleen to his brother, John Richard Harvey and moved up to this location and opened a "whitedirt" operation. Mrs. Will Dickie told me when she camre to Nelson to teach that there was still a pile of white dirt up there. This white dirt was kaolin and some of the purest in the world, but the British had learned how to grind bones and make bone china ( I read this in a Dept. Agriculture booklet when I worked at Piney River forVirginia Carolina Chemical Co. bought out by American Cyanamid in July 1944. I like Hilda and I always had hoped I would someday see her again on one of my visits back to Nelson Co. Maybe someday I will meet one of her family.I was so sorry to hear of the passing of her sister-in-law, Frances Stratton Harvey recently.
